I think you misunderstood what I was asking, it wasn't to compare you with Google or anything. But I got my answer further down the thread, and it's amazing that you pay full salary to people who live outside of the Bay Area. Way

Are you thinking about adjusting the salaries as well? I mean, it sounds like a win-win situation to me. If a family can save, say, $3,000 a month on rent, and the company can save, say, $1,500 on an engineers salary, both are actually bett

I used to work at a project where I suggested doing EXACTLY this, because the customers were pretty old-school Microsoft Office users and we had to store lots of documents and organize them. The idea never caught on because the people didn&

Words can't express how sad I feel about people who write and believe in such a logic. Where is our humanity gone? How can you think that by helping people (legal or not) you are doing something wrong? USA is a country that has a massi

Ruby 3x3 is here already. It's called Elixir ;) No, seriously, if your heart beats for Ruby, you will fall in love with Elixir. Give it a try and you won't look back.

You are right. I'm not saying Apple is doing bad. It's just short-sighted to let the Mac (Pro) die. They might need a more colorful palette of products in the future. It's easier for them to keep the Mac alive than having to

I think that Apple forget that video pros are also consumers. And their families. Usually Apple products thrive in families where at least one member is a professional that uses Macs for work. It just fits the whole idea of an ecosystem, so

I've always found this whole idea of a Code of Conduct pretty broken. It seems to be a document written by some kind of abstract, shared moral authority which apparently has the power to decide what's good or bad. You could possib

Could you elaborate on that? How would one accept the tradeoff of having one more piece of software to manage vs performance or other considerations? I've heard cowboy does a pretty solid job serving requests, even static files (althou

On the web development part of my job, I'm excited about Elixir / Phoenix getting more and more mindshare. People I talk to are actively trying Elixir out and evaluating it as the tool of choice for their next projects. On the net

I don't think it's that. GitLab IS a complex setup and Rails is not helping making it simple. There is a ton going on in the stack and the company only has limited resources.

It might be. I'm not saying it's impossible to scale Rails. It's just very, very hard. Github can do this, because they probably get the best of the best engineers. They even used to have their own, patched Ruby version. Not

I'm a bit curious here. Do you think that your issues with scalability and reliability have to do with your tech choice (I think it was Ruby on Rails)? Don't want to bash Rails, I'm just genuinely curious, since I come from a

It should be called Front-End Developer Handbook Early 2017. Or even early Feb 2017 ;) Now seriously, how's the front-end progressing currently? Has the pace become a bit more humane?

I think that with proper deploy automation (e.g. Ansible) and the right approach (avoid hot-code updates unless your REALLY need them) you are going to get a pretty solid deploy experience, no matter what your target deploy platform is. Jus

I don't see why it should be painful. What were the issues you were facing? I found that besides hot-code updates, there is not as much magic as one could think, and once you "grasp" the idea of a build machine, it should be

I do not agree that it is a pain in the ass. It's not more or less complex than many other languages. Also, the tooling has improved a lot in the recent months and edeliver + distillery work great, even without much previous experience
