I haven't read the book, but this article doesn't really say anything that any clear-minded open source advocate didn't already know. Outside of certain dogmatic circles, it's become pretty clear that the future of open source development i

That's pretty much how mine works as well. Once things start accumulating to the point where I don't even try to get it down for a few days (200+ messages), it pretty much means that I'm not in control at the moment. Conversely, actually ge

I agree, and will also point out that the referenced site ( http://readthefuckinghig.tumblr.com/ ) is terrible, IMO. Does the holier-than-thou author not know how to use the fucking shift key?

From the Wired article: Much of it is likely attributable to Twitter’s general counsel Alexander Macgillivray. As security and privacy blogger Christopher Soghoian notes, Macgillivray was one of the first law students at Harvards’ Berkman

Depends on what your definition of "obsolete" is. Even if they release a new one, it doesn't instantly cause all of the older ones to stop working.

But using introductory programming courses as an example of writing real-world code would be a huge mistake. Most of those assignments in my day were almost trivially easy for someone that actually understands the material (and almost impos

My guess is that if a company is willing to sponsor specific development, he is willing to negotiate. I.e. fee-for-service to some extent.

I think that without macros, any language claiming to "replace lisp" is only doing so superficially. EDIT: Just to clarify, I don't think the Haskell designers are claiming that it "replaces lisp," just that this blog entry does.

I love thinking on paper. In this case, I’m not going to go back and edit this entry so it looks like I had it all along. No, I’d rather show you my thought process. Actually, I'd rather read a well-thought out argument that has been edit

I agree. In pretty much all of my theoretical computer science courses, whenever it came to the math there always seemed to be a lot of hand-waving and noise, but not a lot of content. Some were better than others, but when I consider some

That's also one reason classmates.com never caught on in the U.S. They charged to do anything interesting on their site (plus it was ugly). One thing to take away from all of these examples is that just having an "idea" isn't enough. You ha

Hey TechCrunch, the next time you complain about how the "mainstream" media doesn't take blogs like yours seriously and doesn't consider your writers journalists, you can look at your handling of the Delicious story as an example of why you

It costs a lot of money to convince a CEO to come to a failing/faltering company. EDIT: I'd just like to add that I think the letter itself is very well written and surprisingly heartfelt.

Except that wildlife is a limited resource that needs to be protected from poachers. It's only like piracy if you think there is an unlimited supply of wildlife that anyone should be able to take as they like.
