Price doesn't matter if you were going to use that electricity for heating anyway. Mostly the project are run by universities funded by tax payers, and don't exist to make any profit. Ever heard of charity?

Old desktops with Boinc running 24/7 make an useful alternative to direct electric heating. Of course a heat pump is more efficient, but not everyone has that.

Transport is just one source of CO2, and can be mostly solved with electric vehiclezs. People buying stuff they really don't need is a much bigger problem.

There's lots to do outside big city centres if your life doesn't evolve around consumiption of services provided by others. Big cities suck for most physical and creative outdoor activities.

IMO Japanese culture and lower level of individualism has a lot to do with the low crime rate. That's the main reason why they don't tolerate much bad behaviour in the first place, and have a justice system which reflects that.

This. I can't understand people who want their plot of land to be without natural life. Might as well sell the house and move to a flat instead.

I wouldn't miss cars or driving if I went carless. I would miss my parents and other relatives who I simply can't reach with public transport. I would also hate not being able to relax in middle of nature so well during weekends.
