It's quite a drama and everybody can relate to the story as a potential host, traveler, or founder.

Also, becoming the single largest stock owner of a company like Disney is probably not a strategy that generalizes well.

Since when is Steve Jobs known for a 'very lavish lifestyle'? I thought he was known for being quite frugal, did I miss something there?

I'm wondering whether the usage of (allegedly less offensive) Latin terms makes any difference to people who actually know Latin well, like priests.

Something similar happened to us when we were staying in Mountain View for YCS09. We had found a cheap furnished apartment sublet via Craigslist. A couple weeks in, I had a friend visiting from Germany and we were having lunch at our plac

Sure, in your case, the tenant's move was particulary bold. Owing two months rent to the landlord is grounds for immediate termination of the contract and eviction in Germany btw.

I'd say your last sentence applies to renting out any kind of apartment. Once you catch the occasional deadbeat tenant (not paying rent for months, damaging the floors etc.), your business case is FUBR.

Berlin resident here. I agree that it's a tough problem to solve and would make verification of hosts (maybe prohibitively) expensive. You'd have to check that the person listing the place is a) actually the tenant, b) is in good standing w

You upload a document, add some signature fields, they email it to all parties for signature, you get the e-signed doc back including an audit trail. Works great for contracts and services agreements.

Maybe they email a lot with the kind of people who embed their fancy company logo as a 50K jpg into their mails, then you're down to 100 mails per day.

When you're doing a startup, chances are that a huge part of your team will be 20-somethings who love the Berlin dirt and parties.

It's apparently important for big corporations, but since a complex tax minimization scheme comes with huge setup and running costs, it's not really important for startups that are bootstrapping or seeking funding. I'd even say that a tax-o

I think the main trigger for big corporations to set up their European subsidies in Ireland were the significant tax breaks offered. Now that Ireland is getting bailed out with EU money, it'll be interesting to see if they can maintain the

Setting up an UG (sort of like a private partnership) has become relatively easy (couple days) and cheap (couple hundred bucks), while a GmbH (LLC) or an AG (corporation) is still a lot more complex and costly (min. 25K EUR capital brought

Personal tax rates are higher, at the same time you get better (and cheaper) healthcare. Corporate tax rates are indeed higher in Germany. At the same time, there are lots of funding opportunities for startups from communal, national and EU

I think my comment was more academic than pragmatic: Once you let go of the assumption that people will invariably do bad things in the absence of external control, the whole model falls apart. As for practical recommendations, I've seen

Not too concerned at this stage. We'll see how well the Prediction API will actually work in the wild for product and content recommendations. Beyond that, I'm not sure whether Google will excel in ease-of-use and support.
