I know nothing about biology, pardon my ignorance. From the article it sounds like mitochondria were a separate organism that has perhaps simplified through specialization and is currently on the boundary of being an independent life form.

Why not aluminum cans? There's still some plastic in there, but you can mostly recycle them, they must be fairly cheap, and they're quite light. As an added benefit they stack higher in transit with less extra packaging, at least

Nvidia's denver2 cores work this way. Shipped on an android tablet about 10 years ago. Not sure what happened to them after that.
