Depends on the kind of work... If I'm working out the math on a new design for a robot, I prefer to be completely alone (in an individual office, or simply working from home). Later, when I'm building the robot and just tightening

Usually, the litmus test is: Does the software work at all without the GPL'd parts? If not, it doesn't matter how segregated you think it is, because it's still dependent on that GPL'd code.

It sucks, but this is always the risk when developing on someone else's proprietary platform.

I have a crazy theory: There is no such thing as open source hardware. It's a myth. If a project has any electronics, there's a closed bit in there somewhere. Even if there are published layout files, the chip is still closed. Can

I was born in New York City, grew up in L.A., started a company in SF, and live in Chicago, but the only place I've ever been held up at gunpoint was in San Francisco at 4th and Mission.

Housing cost is the #1 reason I moved away, and the #1 reason I stay away. I lived in Mountain View 2007 to mid-2008 for my job at Google. We were renting a house close to campus at the time and contemplated what it would cost to put down r

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. I learned to program in HyperTalk as a kid and loved it. I still miss it. AppleScript, on the other hand, I can't stand. I think the difference is that HyperTalk can be considered a DSL for t

I miss HyperTalk. It was my first "love" programming language. I agree, HyperTalk was different enough from AppleScript that you could be productive in HyperTalk, but lost in AppleScript. It might be due to the fact that AppleScri

I may want something awesome, but wanting something now is a higher priority. When prototyping, I value my time and how fast I can iterate through the create-test-modify cycle more than build quality. At home, the quality has to be good e
