I second this recommendation of Melbourne (and coming from a Sydney native like me, that really means something). But I'm not sure if an Australian visa is any easier to get than a US one.

I disagree. Spam has a low success rate, so it's only extremely profitable when the cost per advertisement is zero. If you have a service where it costs _any_ money to post then spammers will go find somewhere else. I think it could work we

Add me to the "never uses switch statements" list. I've never seen the point in learning the syntax in any of the languages I know, since a bunch of else ifs (or elseifs, or elsifs, or elifs, depending on the language) does the same thing.

Ideal from the point of view of the entrepreneur, perhaps, but why is this ideal from the point of view of the investor?

Ahh, well in that case you've got all sorts of new problems. If it's structured so that the fund owns the share and the 100 people own the fund then you have the problem that there's all sorts of regulations saying that only "accredited inv

As far as I know there's no reason why it wouldn't work, as long as you can find a bunch of rich people and/or pension funds willing to give you lots of money. There are presumably legal issues involved with setting it up as a proper ventur

Do you think JFK had any idea if the technology would be ready when he declared the goal of a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s? Yes. Do you think he got up and made that pronouncement without at least asking, say, Wernher von B

Well okay, I'm not sure whether having a working prototype actually makes it officially not-vaporware, but until there's something I can actually buy I remain skeptical about the range and price.

Sure, but Joe VC's venture funds usually have a ten-year lifetime, so year-to-year fluctuations in the skittishness of investors shouldn't be that big a problem. Your average VC is still working to invest a big pile of money he raised years

Places I've lived: Sydney: You should spend more money on real estate. Melbourne: You should spend more money on clothes. London: You should have been here 150 years ago. Davis, CA: You should leave Davis, CA.

I've never been to the Science Museum in Oakland, but New York has some pretty good science museums. And I can't really say that Science and Oakland go together all that way in my mind either.

Imagine some black bum you drive by, imagine how he sees cambridge. For him its not a place of ideas. There is no push towards reading. I'm not sure why you felt the need to bring the hypothetical bum's race into it, but I disagree. A bum

And I don't like country music. But if I were to sit around hoping that country music ceased to exist and that all the people who currently enjoy country music would be forced to no longer listen to it, that would make me a dick.

Somewhere in between the raving Al Gores of the world and the equally raving "No, global warming is totally impossible!" folks is a sparsely-populated region of sensible opinion. It seems like Freeman Dyson is somewhere in this region, but

Basically we'd almost all starve to death. Transporting food would become uneconomical. Hell, harvesting food would become uneconomical. The trickle of food which got into urban areas would sell for insanely high prices. The rich would stil
