You do realise that the King James Bible is just a fairly recent translation of a bunch of much older stuff and that we have much older Bibles written in various languages, right? Now, a first draft of the Koran , that would put the cat am

I don't pretend to know or especially care about accuracy, but the semi-archaic language of the King James Version gives it a certain authoritative-sounding zing that others may lack. "Thou shalt not kill" sounds a whole lot

Iceland is still breeding at a healthy yet sustainable 2.04 births per woman, actually. Compare to 1.4 in Italy (and I thought they were Catholics!) or 1.38 in Germany. Actually now I look it up the US is only 1.88 in the last stats that co

This is true. In fact I'd put the causality the other way -- Europeans are going slowly extinct precisely because of the unavailiability to the regular family of things they take for granted in America: big cars and big houses. It&#x

But how can Americans socially signal their sophistication and enlightenment without talking about how much better things are in Europe?

Not very hard, once you know how to do it. No idea if it's been done correctly here though.

Sure. Livejournal is still going strong somewhere, after all. Most people will eventually move on to the next thing, though, and the thing after that. Live by the network effect, die by the network effect.

The same possible gain that motivates people to blow themselves up and crash planes into buildings and burn churches and synagogues. That is, no possible gain that a rational person would understand. But Islam is not a rational memeplex.

If challenged I would stick it under "negotiating a contract". "Yes, I am negotiating a contract for investment. The work I am doing is part of the negotiation"

> What if I told you a lot of people find Transformers: Dark of the Moon as pretentious and vapid as its title is ? Then I guess I'd say "yeah, probably"? I haven't seen any of the Transformers movies past the first o

That's why he said "too artsy and pretentious for me" instead of "too artsy and pretentious in absolute terms and those who disagree can suck it". Chill, nobody is insulting your taste in movies.

I'm not saying it's not aliens, but it's not aliens. I read the paper which quite happily discusses clouds of debris of various kinds and avoids any mention of aliens. Comets sound reasonable. Still, it looks like an object w

Interesting, but I'm confused. I had to look up Doggerland but apparently it's been submerged for 6000 years and was in the North Sea, why couldn't your Norwegian ancestors have come from Doggerland originally?

So why not shift operations to a less restrictive country? Make people tick a box that says "I am currently outside the United States" to receive the fancy information, if necessary.

Seems an important distinction given that the largest quake recorded in California was a 7.9 and the largest in San Francisco a 7.8. So presumably an 8.0 is plausible but an 8.5 may not be.
