The Web is now little-endian thanks to ArrayBufferViews exposing endianness and everyone testing only the little-endian case. It doesn't make sense to make big-endian hardware that needs to run a Web browser anymore, so chances are tha

Cases with primitive arguments are easy to understand, but I think it would be beneficial for the Rust book to have way more detailed info about working with buffers and heap-allocated structs that the other language holds onto past the for

It does HBO Nordic injustice to say it is similar to HBO Go. HBO Go requires a subscription to the linear HBO TV channel. HBO Nordic is free of user-hostile tying to cable TV. And unlike HBO Now, HBO Nordic isn't Apple TV exclusive. In

Weird move. I thought various broadcasters had figured that DAB doesn 't provide enough user benefit over FM and fm win on compatibility. I guess codec proprietors will pocket some royalties.

When it comes to protocols and formats, using the word "proprietary" adds more confusion than clarity. Consider: H.264 has a spec that's written down by a standards-setting organization and not a trade secret (though behind a

Saying "EME DRM plug-ins track users" is misleading. Rather, an EME DRM plug-in designed only to fulfill its DRM mission in a straight-forward way without specifically trying to also fulfill a privacy mission is likely to have the

In the HTML5 context, adaptive streaming is done with the MSE API. This involves fetching the media data using XHR. Since mixed-content XHR is blocked, if the app is on an https origin, the media data has to come from https origins, because

No mention of OTR. :-( When your client is a Web app on a trusted server (i.e. OTR key on the server), you could avoid multi-client issues by having only that on XMPP client that you connect to from multiple browsers.

It's quite different from innerHTML, since document.write inserts source characters to the character stream going into the parser, and there's no guarantee that all elements that get opened get closed. There's even no guarant

Fun times ahead if document.write isn't already supported. When I rewrote Gecko's HTML parsing, accommodating document.write was a (or maybe the) dominant design issue.

I didn't. Having to be aware of tools like this is the problem when you face the requirement of having to set up gpg-agent and you don't already know how to do so in an environment where a desktop environment from your distro hasn

Using gpg is not so awesome. Obnam uses gpg. Since Obnam invokes gpg in batch mode, if you want to have a passphrase, you have to use gpg-agent, which at least for me took more effort than I found reasonable to set up on a GUIless server. F

I got downvoted here on HN for worrying that anti-LLVM politics could hinder the adoption of Rust in GNU projects. Looks like my worry of anti-LLVM politics affecting what gets into GNU projects isn't entirely unfounded.

With NPAPI each site picked one plug-in that worked in multiple browsers. Another site could pick another single plug-in that also worked in multiple browsers. With EME, each browser supports some DRM(s) and there's no single DRM suppo

There is no single "the DRM module". Microsoft has its own in IE. Google has its own in Chrome. Apple has its own in Safari. Adobe has its own (that Firefox will be able to use). None of these have open specs.

Why do you expect Firefox and Chrome to take patches as opposed to saying that patches should wait for specs from the TLS WG which waits for the CFRG to bless something? The political problem is that unless there's an authority whose b
