I think the idea's really neat, but at the same time I'm concerned about the effect that things like this have on the attitude of our culture. A large part of critical reading is being able to take the time to read an article/passage in-dep

Arguably, from a design perspective, a wider column of text is harder to read than a narrower column of text. I personally find Google to be more legible than it was before at 53% result space. That's just me, though.
