No, I remember reading that JetBrains offered to help Google develop the IDEA plugin. With Eclipse it would have been a solo effort. I have written Eclipse plugins (one with a graph editor as well) and didn't find it all that complicat

I don't get the Eclipse hate at all. I have used both Eclipse and IntelliJ and I much prefer Eclipse's overall interface. It was also much faster than IntelliJ on a very large Scala project that I was working on. Despite that, I t

"This is stupid. You severe ties with the NSA but what about the FBI, CIA, DEA, DISA, DIA, the list goes on." Well, I wouldn't call it stupid. Perhaps I would call it "incomplete". Or "hey, that's a start!

Software could evolve too, given sufficient time. A hard-disk corruption here, a transmission error there... Moreover, a virus could be deliberately designed to mutate, so as to evade anti-virus software. In fact, isn't this already be

From a practical perspective, SVG would be easier to create, while being just as small and fast. This seems to be just a demo of the capability of CSS.

20 typhoons a year is a lot of typhoons! How did this land (through the course of history) ever become habitable? Or have the typhoons been increasing in frequency in the recent past?

The autocomplete timings are one part of it. I am more concerned about other parts which are not publicly documented and seem to contain possibly identifiable information. I will be very happy if my suspicions are proven unfounded. Aside, t

I grew up reading Richard Feynman, and was particularly impressed by his dislike for tipping (both giving and receiving), because it matched my thoughts on it. He was from the US, and I don't think he was being an ass-hole.

SF didn't have a good sustenance plan. If they had a way to charge users directly (instead of bombarding them with ads), they could have continued to provide good service to open-source projects. As a user, it is a good idea to researc

Consider another perspective. When a new land is made habitable, how do you allocate it? If Mars or Antartica were to become habitable tomorrow, which parties would be able to purchase how much land and from whom? I think early explorers wi

What you are supposed to see there is not "value" but "profit and potential". If a utility company which provides basic necessities were to make a lot of profit, wouldn't it be sort of a bad outcome for humanity? Is

My hunch is that Google's spam detection is not necessarily better than open-source solutions. It's just that they may have a larger corpus of data to train the system on. If I host my own email server, my spam filter will only ha

The best solution to that would be to ask them. Dear friend, what is a good time to call you? Between X to Y UTC? Sure that works by me too. With a common time reference, you wouldn't need to map between time-zones.

It is possible that it appears complicated because it is not common to use UTC. But let's try to imagine the scenario further... So Spanish people typically siesta between 1100 to 1300 UTC. Imagine, my home country is UK. I work betwee

I agree with you as a fellow hacker. But I don't think this can be called a solution for end-users, who would just like things to work out of the box. And as an app developer, one needs to consider the problems of the end-user. That is

Any software that supports timezones, already supports the UTC. You just have to tell it to use a 0 tz offset. I suspect, it is more of a wetware problem.

Well, how can you be sure that all around the world, people go home at 7pm in all seasons, and in all latitudes? Heck, if you happened to call someone in France in the afternoon you might disturb them from their siesta!
