Last year, I had spent about a week in benchmarking SPDY. Server push didn't show any improvements to page load time for even first-time visitors. The whole benchmark was scripted with Chrome running in a dummy X server. The round-trip

IIRC: from the point of view of the human, it takes infinite time to reach the event horizon, since their speed will approach the speed of light. So the actual experience of passing through the event horizon never occurs!

I would say Google's design sucks today . Their websites were much more usable before the UI makeover. I guess the focus of the new UI is to make it appear shiny and vibrant and spacious at first glance. But it has come at the expense

I wasn't comparing that particular paper with malicious code. Inaccurate papers in other fields (like biology) might have a more significant impact. If we were to continue the GitHub analogy, it would be great if ArXiv had a public &qu

What matters is the effect. If someone puts up code on GitHub which purports to compute the Fibonacci series, but mistakenly does a `rm -r ~/*` then surely there should be a way to flag that code or author ("consequences").

Privacy is not all or nothing. It is about context. Information _x_ may be shareable with person _p_, but might be an invasion of privacy if it is shared with other people. So "not putting deeply private stuff in an email" is not

IMO, Java in its own interest should not install/enable the Java browser plugin by default after installation of a JRE. Java as a browser plugin is outdated in this decade of HTML5. Sure, it might be irreplaceable in some niches; for t

That could be also implemented in my proposed fix by example.com setting the auth cookies. They will continue to be readable by store.example.com. Sure, it will require a change on the server side, which is a pain. But I can't think of

Why isn't the obvious fix discussed: Change browsers to not let subdomains set cookies for parent domains. Probably this feature is of critical use. If so, would be grateful if someone explains it to me.

How much should the rest of the world care about this? If a web service is hosted, say, in Europe and is being consumed by a customer also in Europe, will they be affected? AFAICT, they shouldn't.

But that doesn't answer the GP's worry about lookup cost. The thing is, it is hard to keep direct references in a nested data structure (like a graph or tree) even in a language that supports direct references. An example: I want
