It sounds like you think all scientists should learn how to code. I am certain that there are many people who rarely use calculus and physics simulations in their work, and who would never need to program even if they knew how.

I agree. And while a genius/superman may be able to do both, everyone has their limits. It may be smarter to pick one thing and focus completey on it.

Saying that the poster has a serious personality disorder is just over the top. Give it a rest, "game" just means having an interpersonal dynamic that makes conversations and relationships more fun and engaging. It doesn't mean changing who

I think when intelligence is mentioned in these discussions it is implicitly defined as "being reasonably capable of doing everything a human can." However, intelligence can also be defined as "the ability to maximize a risk/reward function

My definition of optimal was in terms of control over the environment. We could kill all 50 billion chickens if we wanted to. If we want to redefine optimal to mean quantity of genes in the environment, then humans don't come out on top rig

> This is a misreading of evolution. To start with, we are not optimal. Not even locally optimal. No species is. Who is the optimal human? Is that person alive today? Optimal refers to having the highest probability of surviving and rep

I get what you're saying -- you could assign a level of importance or interesting-ness to an article that would be different than other people's. I think adding a collaborative filter to HN or Reddit based on what you vote and view could a

That's interesting. So it seems that Twitter integration provides the best content. I'm don't use Twitter very much, so that's not an option for me. If my experience is the same as every other non-twitter user's, then it's likely that Prism

I don't really see how news can be "personalized." News isn't personal, it's just "what happened." It can be separated into categories and sub-categories ad infinitum, and I could subscribe to those categories, but I can already do that by

"I suppose that is one way to reduce incarceration rates: reduce the number of laws." Yes, and legalizing drugs would be one way of doing that. "I thought drugs were okay?" Marijuana was found to be non-harmful by medical researchers. Certa

Your opinion is very uninformed. You can't think of anything positive that would result? What about: - ending our massively expensive "war on drugs" - ending massive spending on incarceration - decreasing the U.S. incarceration rate, which

What problems do these ideas solve? I suppose working with mentors could help students be better prepared to join the workforce, but students can already do that on their own by getting internships. Classes could be self-paced, but then lik

I have a hard time understanding why people bought FB IPO stock. The P/E ratio was around 100 when it went public, and their main revenue source didn't seem to be growing fast enough to justify this. I know hindsight is 20/20, but I'm genui

I'm sure Elon will get his due. It's just a matter of time before the rest of the world finds out about his accomplishments. E.g., I don't think many of us here on HN were surprised to see Drew Houston on the cover of Forbes.
