There's an old joke in math/physics student circles that covers this. Student goes to see the prof in their office hours to try to understand something the prof said is seen to be trivial. They spend 4 hours working on it, and th

I gotta say I disagree. I got the space change bit quickly (piece-wise linear space into frequency space). Complex plane's aren't a crutch, really they are the firm theoretical basis in which to express the detailed discussion p

Basically ... yes. This is one of my arguments about the scientific method in general. You start with something you can't really explain, that seems to match data a bit better than the previous theory. You keep refining it, and even

As someone who works with 10s to 100s of TB of data from SQL and SQL-like DBs on a daily basis, writes lots of analytical code, I can say, emphatically, BS. Unless your analyses are trivial (column mean, max, etc.), chances are you need a r

I've known all 3 of the enumerated types. I'd suggest a 4th to add in. - The humble one, who helps mentor their colleagues to be better at what they do. They do this by helping provide critical insight at important junctures. B

I love the concept. I created and ran a PXE/netbooted full OS on ramdisk[1] for my old companies servers for years. We were in the high performance computing and storage space. Stateless machines have so many advantages over statefu

If you substitute "windows" for Linux, you have a true statement. All the (mostly rando) laptops in my house (5) which were shipped with windows pre-installed, with broken features/drivers were wiped, and Linux was installed.

I seem to recall one of Netflix or Amazon Prime also claims to not be able to play UHD content on my linux machines. I've never really dug into it, as the SDR I can watch it in is fine for me. That said, it seems odd that silliness li

Almost same config as my deskside. I've got 16 Epyc CPU cores, 128GB RAM, and 2TB of NVMe along with 8TB of ZFS mirror with hot spare. Same GPU. Linux Mint went on w/o problem. I did have to switch from nouveau to nvidia drive

I still haven't fixed that on my Macbook, as iterm2's changes mess with Karabiner's changes. It is a pain in the ass.

My M1 Macbook pro is connected to a Dell thunderbolt desktop docking station. This had caused me so much grief with the screen, that I directly connected the 43 inch monitor to the M1 rather than go through the dock. Moreover, the etherne

Linux mint is brain dead simple. Everything just works. Same version runs on a 14 year old laptop as well as it does on a newer Epyc deskside workstation. There are others like it, but Mint is really quite simple to use, and quite a prod

What I'd learned from almost 15 years running a "startup" hitting multi-million revenue years for the last 6 of the life of the company, is that there is a preternatural bias against you (not personally, but your small compan

Auto companies notoriously pay their people poorly. They are losing many talented engineers as a result. I know quite a few in the industry here in Michigan. The engineers who remain at the autos, are blown away by the salaries their for

This. So much. I'd argue that the first order of business is getting the code committed to SCM. Then you can coach the team on new branches (features/bugs), and build the culture of using the SCM. Do this before going to the ex
