I'm thinking something way less necessary. One example off the top of my head is https://www.apple.com/iphone/ with all the text appearing slowly as you scroll down. It's kinda understandable cause it's

A lot of modern websites even add an intentional delay for buttons to respond or even load because it "looks nice."

Maybe I'm in over my head, but that's how I interpreted it too. It's annoying how every news source and even Wikipedia doesn't make it clear what this law does.

To clarify, the law bans TikTok and also lets the president ban other apps in the future.

The timing and rhetoric from lawmakers make this ban really seem about Israel. Lawmakers and citizens are pretty disconnected on that in general.

Rep Mike Gallagher, the sponsor of the bill, published this op-ed making it sound like a speech issue: https://www.thefp.com/p/tik-tok-young-americans-hamas-mike-g...

It's both. It gives the President the authority to designate an app as controlled by a foreign adversary, forcing it to be banned or sold. It also names TikTok in particular. I didn't know about the second part until I read the or

The actual bad precedent set here is that the US executive branch has the authority to censor the media.

Well, the law as agreed upon by Congress designates it as a personal power.

A/B testing has the same problem unless you figure out how to treat the same user the same way each time. But yeah I generally don't give much credence to an assertion like this that isn't based on a real-world experience. It

Regular A/B testing has the same kind of randomness. But this is more complex for other reasons.

Yeah, if you're going to conditionally add filters, this is mostly the only way with SQL. There are a few tricks depending on the dialect, like =ANY() is more convenient than IN, or COALESCE can avoid some dynamic WHEREs. You're n

So if one app writes files somewhere random, can another app simply read them? So two apps can share data that isn't something standard like the camera roll. Even then, I don't see why the PC can't back up the whole phone.

Conditional concat should be pretty rare. When are you doing that?

I've never used Android, so the answers here are surprising. There's really no equivalent to iTunes/Finder that'll just back up your phone to a PC?

If you can avoid learning SQL or the underlying DBMS then great, I have no problem with people ignoring things that are ignore-able. Problem is you can't. You will need to learn the DBMS, and the ORM will end up just getting in the way

SQLite has its own use cases. And MySQL was all-around better than Postgres in the past, so it still has more usage in some areas. Nowadays I'll take Postgres over MySQL by default, but it's not a huge difference.

Weird as they seem at first, SQL null handling ends up being convenient the way it is. Part of this is because left/right join give you nulls.

That wider problem may simply be that you're using C or C++ with optimized binaries and can't reproduce the bug in the unoptimized/debug build.

Regex is a good counterexample. It's the only useful DSL I can think of. That said, IDE support for regex would be cool, especially considering many languages have special syntax for regex.

Technically yeah, but JSX isn't what people think of when you mention a DSL. I know JS, I know HTML, so I know JSX immediately since it's just templatized HTML inside JS.

I used MySQL before I understood it at the physical level, and now I'm using some other ones that I don't really understand. A MySQL/Postgres noob can get pretty far just knowing to avoid seq scans. It's not ideal, but i

Maybe for the same reason I stopped using headphones with my phone: There's no headphone jack, and Bluetooth is too finicky. Airlines have also been passing out cheap earbuds for a while. They can't do that for Bluetooth now.

For multiple reasons outside of devs' control, PWAs basically don't fly on iPhones. They don't go to all that extra effort of packing a webapp into a "native" app just for fun.

iPhones support PWAs on homescreen. However, there's no way to trigger the "install the PWA?" prompt. The user has to do it, which very few know about, and maybe that's what you were thinking of.
