Actually, it's terrible and nothing like the Buffer email. This one is impersonal and it's all me, me, me... all about the project and the company, not the customer. And "I think you signed up a couple weeks ago now..." sounds bizarrely v

There are obviously legal technicalities but just in terms of humanely treating your users — don't assume they've agreed to something they haven't read.

I think this is really interesting and important. We (web developers, entrepreneurs) can't expect to just slap a "Terms of Service" link in tiny grey font at the bottom of every page and expect that to be legally binding. We can't expect ag

You are not your customers! If is irrelevant what you would pay or how much value you would get from the service. If a good tour helps to retain just one subscription customer a month, that easily justifies x10 the $3 price.

I'm loving the features that Stripe are throwing out (and I'm not even a customer <insert obligatory call to come to Ireland>). I imagine there's huge scope for using OAuth to open up the data for hosted metrics, dashboards or other

When will Google submit it? I suspect Google will let Apple (and us users) stew in this for a while. Just long enough so everyone feels the pain but not long enough for them to forget Google Maps Personally, StreetView down every little sin

Look at it the other way: requiring a credit card up-front gets you less unqualified tyre-kickers so the people who do sign up are probably far more motivated by the pain you're solving, and so are much more likely to become a paying custom

A few week ago I discovered Postgres Schemas (worst named feature ever -- nothing to do with SQL schema definitions). Basically, schemas allow you to have multiple databases within a single database. So, you only need to manage (or host/pay

That's what I was going to say: it's not a mortal danger but we should not ignore the fact that plenty of people have committed suicide after the battling depression brought on by a failed/failing business.

Although I've just started out, my client came to me because I started a Ruby user group in our area. My name is still attached to "Ruby Cork" even though the group fizzled out 2years ago. Now I'm working with Rails full-time again, I'll be

I find it somewhat suspicious that the original Pixate kickstarter was for ¢200,000 but they cancelled that 6 days prior to the deadline, with only ~$21k raised [1]. Now they're back with a new kickstarter for $25,000 (which they've passed)

I recently watched this video which is mostly about Postgres but also pokes some fun at MySQL's weirdness. I didn't realise how scary MySQL can be http://vimeo.com/m/43536445

It doesn't just apply to startup advice. I've stopped reading articles or watching screencasts which, although interesting, is not immediately actionable. Instead, I'll bookmark it so I feel that I can get back to it when needed and I move

There's a long history of other professions providing their own equipment: barbers buy their own scissors, chefs buy their own knives and builders/plumbers/electricians are often required to buy some equipment themselves. I'm not saying I a

Well, most companies aren't going to pay for a standing desk (and we're forbidden from using our own equipment). There's also the cultural thing: if I was standing I'd be able to see across the whole floor of cubicles which not only makes m

Wait. Does twitter have a reputation system running, even just in the background? That sounds like a very interesting direction for them (and, I secretly hope, a solution to the prevalent spam problem) Or is this just a side-project?
