If something is expensive, you ask yourself "what justifies this price", with the expectation of greater quality, features, stability, support or whatever. If something is free, you also ask "what justifies this price", but this time you ex

Actually, it's probably more along the lines of the Future Soldier initiative -- maybe a viable exoskeleton or an advance in materials towards that end.

Hire out the designer and use the money to retrain the lisp hackers to do something useful? I'm guessing that punchlines aren't what you were looking for though. You seem to be looking for a problem (a startup idea) that requires a particu

I may get flamed for saying so but Dreamhost support RoR apps, lots of bandwidth/disk space and all for $11/month. It's shared hosting but they support mod_rails / Phusion Passenger which is working out great for me so far (I'm running a R

I guess it depends whether the iTunes music store is about selling music or just selling music to ipod owners . Obviously, Apple's priority is the latter (understandably from a business / monopoly point of view). However, if the iPod/i

100% agree. I hate that iTunes store. I'd really like to legally buy an MP3 for my wife's Creative Zen and yet I have to install iTunes? Hell, I can't even see if they stock the track. Nah, don't think I'll bother thank you very much.

Learning to code is one thing but learning to debug is something else. Even if you can figure out how to build something, it takes a certain tenacity and logical thinking to figure out how to solve a problem. Some people have it, some peo

The Awesome bar is actually pretty good but it takes some getting used to. The bookmarks menu is weird and just plain stupid. And frankly, it crashes more often than any piece of software I've owned in the last 5 years. I'm almost willin

That's funny cos I did exactly the same thing! I tried using Google Notebook for a while but I just kept fighting the rich text editor. I used Backpack for a while to keep Writeboards but that quickly got tedious. A quick 2-day stint produ

Round ones are easier to screw on ;-) Short answer: They're not. At least, they're not round everywhere in the world. There are plenty of square and square-like covers in the UK/Ireland, some of which split in half diagonally. Perhaps a

Just noticed that the "Passenger blog": http://izumi.plan99.net/blog/index.php/2008/04/11/phusion-pa... mentions that Dreamhost has been beta testing Passenger. If thats true, and Dreamhost rolls it out (soon!), then Rails is going to bec

Nice (if I used iTunes, but the principle holds). It's also proof towards the idea that if you find something to be a problem, other people probably do too!

I'm always confused by people who don't have an idea but want to start a business. Surely, an idea has to come first (even if the business ends up doing something else). I maintain an ideas list which is added too weekly. They're not al
