I like the idea of an overall, single-value "raveld" score. I've seen alot of these types of services popping up lately. How does your service differentiate itself from competitors such as Cloudyn or UptimeCloud?

You don't need to use exif data. Many tools use the often ignored alpha channel of each pixel. In this case, you have X x Y bytes of available storage where X and Y are the width and height of the image.

For lighttpd, try the following in your config to log in a format identifical to that of Apache's combined log format. accesslog.format = "%h %V %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\"" See the docs on ModAccess

The premise is interesting, but there isn't anything conclusive about part 1. Part 1 is also incredibly short. It left me wondering why the story is even divided into parts at all. I felt as if I started watching a 30 minute TV show and "TO

Hi there, you must have caught me right before I increased the level of caching in place on my very-undersized Linode. You should be able to access the site now. Thank you!

Yep, sorry about this, my Linode is buckling under the pressure. I'm increasing caching as I type!

Customers are sometimes abusive, particularly on support lines. Anyone who works in a service industry needs to learn to deal with that. Even if they don't interact with customers, they should learn the people skills anyhow because really w

I'm going to agree with you and take it a step further: MySQL vs NoSQL shouldn't even BE a battle. Pick whatever technology or software is right for your application. If you're choosing sides on any other basis, you're losing.

Very cool. Curious why you didn't use fabric.api.put instead of `run(_write_to(config_file, "/home/%(SERVER_USERNAME)s/nginx.conf" % fabconf))` ?

Based on the majority (since the title is going for "everybody") of people who drop into #mysql on any given day to ask about slow queries, I'd argue that the majority of people who thinks MySQL joins are slow still don't have proper indexe

I've been seeing the notion of accounting for the loss of sales due to "reputation" come up on HN recently and I wish to dispute it. First, most of the time when we're talking about business and we talk about costs we're clearly talking abo

Thanks! I'm definitely not complaining, but it's a complete 180 since up until February my bounce rate floated between 80 and 100% I had made some REALLY significant changes around that time, and the drop could be attributed to any and all

I wish Sony would at least push a patch that stops from trying to log me in before I can do anything. Netflix, for example, prompts me to login twice before I can play any videos. (Maybe it's Netflix that needs to push the patch?)

Ask HN: Is there such thing as a bounce rate that's "too low"?

I agree with you 100% that they're not independent, but I don't know enough about the data to model the probabilities of failure and availability in a HN comment :-) After today's event, it would certainly be interesting to see how resource

I don't think the cost of expanding to other regions/AZs is necessarily linear such that adding a zone would incur 50% more costs. Going from one zone to two would probably look that way (or even one server to two), but when you start going

I think you're right, that would be the best way of presenting this argument to management. To do so, however, the company would need to calculate its Total Cost of Downtime (which probably isn't very complex for many companies) which is it

Amazon's EC2 SLA is extremely clear - a given region has an availability of 99.95%. If you're running a website and you haven't deployed across across more than one region then, by definition, your website will have 9
