I agree with the parent comment, it is easiest to just play with it. If you're particularly interested in Python webapps, I've written a tutorial on how Kubernetes can help deploy a Django app in a scalable and resilient fashion:

This sort of headline involving Linode is (unfortunately) beginning to feel extremely frequent. I am happy that I've since moved away to GCP, but this is still sad to hear.

I tend to agree with you completely and came here to essentially say what you've said above so I won't repeat it. The only place where my opinion diverges is ansible -vvvv. The output is so horrendously verbose and yet it's s

This is exciting. I need to update my Django Kubernetes tutorial ( https://harishnarayanan.org/writing/kubernetes-django/ ) with some new constructs that simplify things.

OP here. That was the plan and I'm glad you appreciate it. :) I wanted to start from something I assumed people knew, and tried to motivate why one might want to improve on that. Only then did I introduce the new solution. A lot of tut

Parallel explorer and OP here. :) I cited your work as additional reading because I really enjoyed watching your talk on this recently! While I'd figured out a bulk of this stuff out, there were a few things I learnt from it too.

If you're running a vanilla Django site with no esoteric libraries with special requirements (like numpy/scipy that need compilers etc. to get installed), this is definitely the correct way to go. But if you do have non-standard r

I'm the author of the original piece. I echo exactly what you say in a giant caveat way up top in the piece. :) Most of the first half of the article beyond that point basically tries to motivate why you'd want to try this beyond

In general (and in my opinion), this is not the best way to acquire such skills. But it is a wonderful way to spend 5–7 years in a relatively stress-free environment while you can exercise your brain, explore different avenues, and pick up

As a PhD in spplied math, I must say I concur wholeheartedly with the author. The true value of a PhD in a quantitative field is less about specific domain knowledge, and more in the set of general problem solving skills you pick up.

I find that separating this process into two steps: 1. Finding things to read, and 2. Reading them really works for me. I spend some time most mornings trawling through my feeds, HN etc. and queue up what I want to read to my read-it-later
