> If you want to save the planet, leaving it to American voters isn't going to work Well, I didn't expect HN to give tacit approval to enlightened dictatorship today! I didn't expect the case to be so persuasive, either..

LoRa is actually a technology built by a massive consortium of vendkrs. Enthusiasts use it creatively in ways like this, and much of the rest of the time this technology is deployed for anything from silly IoT chicken coop controllers to di

The post describes quite clearly that there are means to message over these links. It wouldn't be a perfect solution, but a lot of good often comes from things that aren't perfect.

Such a hideously dystopian idea. Yeah, let's allow (probably the US) government or some billionaires to start blotting out the sun instead of scaling back our dependence on fuels that were always pretty dreadful environmentally, social

One of the first things journalism students learn is that news, by its nature, is significant or it isn't news. The "significance score" is deeply subjective and clearly defaults to an american worldview. So if I were a subed

I'd wager yes, for that very reason. Years ago I was in hospital and a registrar told me that guts are smelly but they're the next big frontier of medicine. I didn't immediately know what she meant, but having thought about i

The (american) thing of paying pittance to waiters because they get tips is weird. Why do people think this is OK? (Apart from the obvious justifications of people who pay virtually nothing for labour)

Zero stars: landlord expected me to pay to live somewhere they did nothing to maintain or add any value to, but at the end I discovered I had not accrued a capital share in the property. Complete scam, avoid.

Surely it isn't pharmaceuticals companies doing blood tests in the US? In the UK people's bloods get done in hospital labs (phlebotomy doesn't always occur in hospital though)

There's something you've missed there: forests - not just trees but the forest's understory, the animals living in it, the microbes in the soil etc - sequester carbon constantly. It isn't just "how much does the tre

Methane - CH4 - degrades to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A quick clip, however, it is not: it can take 20 years, during which that single carbon atom yields 20x the global warming potential as part of a methane molecule than it does as

If we're seeking to halt climate change, it seems quite reasonable to look at effective measures for that. If decreasing methane emissions from landfill or farming might contribute, it seems odd to write those things off. This is partl
