I've seen a few friends recently start homeschooling as a way to opt out of the public school system without paying for private school. In every one of these situations, the wife stays at home to raise and teach the kids while the man

I don't think so. SXSW is more for launching and networking with VCs, marketing folks, and doing business development. Developers largely avoid it. I would stick to security and privacy focused conferences that cater to developers.

I was in a very similar situation 4 years ago when I switched from 100% .NET work in my local area to 100% Ruby/Rails work remotely. The first suggestion would be to join a Javascript developers meetup in your area. If there isn't

As someone that probably comes close to fitting the bill, here are the reasons I wouldn't apply. 1. You're in NYC, where everyone is currently getting obliterated by snow. For positions like this you should hire in spring or summe

Last I checked, the metrics around prevailing wages to hire an H1B are not adjusted based on the local market. So you can get away with paying an H1B the same in the Bay Area as you would in suburban Iowa.

The target candidate for these startups largely doesn't exist. Most folks accepting such a salary in the Bay Area are recently out of college and living in small apartments with roommates. When it's all said and done, most of thes

Hypothetically, let's say every YC startup was to double the starting salaries for programmers they hired. So if they are paying $120K-$150K/year, they start paying $240K-$300K/year. At that salary, programmers are getting pa

I think the technology and capabilities likely exist for Google or any other entity to do this classification for us. But it's a slippery slope. Do we want machine learning algorithms to show us what to care about? Won't that some

It's unlikely because most people move to Colorado to enjoy the outdoors. If you're working 80 hours a week, good luck enjoying the mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, etc that Colorado has to offer. It never changed the cultur

The only way to decrease sprawl would be to increase density, and frankly few Coloradoans would go for that. Few cities outside of Denver have tall buildings because people don't like their mountain views obstructed. And public transpo

Highly unlikely. Boulder's incentive is also to keep the prices reasonable so that there is enough affordable student housing for the 31,000 students that live in the town. Students make up 30% of the population of the entire town. The

Python /w Flask is probably the best technical fit. PHP would make sense only if you have someone on your team that is already quite familiar with it and knows a number of PHP developers that you can hire to build out a team later on.

Moving to the Bay Area. It's come up quite a bit over the past few years due to the opportunities out there, but with the housing cost and all the talk of a crash being imminent, it seems like an exceedingly bad time to go for it.
