Commercial rated pilot here. It's definitely a bit of a learned skill, but it doesn't honestly take that long to learn, and it works better than any other alternative might. The most important thing is for everyone in the system

...which 50 seat jets are you talking about? At that size I would expect turboprops to be preferred, and turboprops of that size are definitely still being built..

Indeed. G100UL is drop in for the entire piston GA fleet, though, not 80percent.

Military pilots are trained to fly in areas where electronic warfare is commonplace. That's not a risk that needs to be in my risk matrix as a GA pilot. I personally think it takes a decent chunk of hubris to believe that the likely o

Three independent electronic devices (two tablets and a phone) running different operating systems would need to fail. And for this to then become an emergency, I would need to be in IMC, also have my onboard installed GPS fail, along with

I'm not sure if you're intentionally misreading my comment. It was in reply to your statement that GPS failure was a "real concern". I simply noted that GPS failure is orthogonal to the paper discussion. I'm quite

I'm always fascinated with the folks who still carry paper sectionals.. at any given time in the cockpit Ive got three digital sources of charts that would have to fail, not counting whatever onboard gps I'm flying behind (primar

A developed spin is an equilibrium of forces. Anything that disrupts that equilibrium has a decent chance of disrupting the spin, and that would include moving the CG aft. However, see my other note as well, there would be a nose down mome

Genuinely interested in how modern radar would get around the line of sight issues? Doesn't line of sight mean that yes, you absolutely can still fly under radar?

Worth noting that spin recovery is highly CG (center of gravity) dependent. Ejecting from an aircraft would significantly alter the CG. It's far more likely that the CG change broke the spin than the pilot was doing something unhelpf

This isn't exactly accurate in my experience... I'm an aviation guy, so I've only ever looked at aviation related NTSB reports, but whenever a final report is issued, the full investigation docket is also released which inclu

Maybe I'm missing it, but what in the photo are you basing your assumption that the photo was from a drone? It could easily have been taken from a helicopter, for example, and the general lack of resolution reinforces that thought to m

That's an amazing amount of effort expended on something that provides exactly zero revenue. I understand the concept, but I've never been fortunate enough to work in a business where that was practical.

There are many answers to your question, but the one that relates most strongly to why there is no radar coverage in the middle of the ocean is that the earth is curved and radar is line of sight.

Uhm.. sort of, I guess? The airplane that Art Scholl died in was a Pitts S-2 BiPlane, not an F-14. So.. pretty different, although yes he died in a spin while filming footage for Top Gun.

You may want to try some empathy. Losing one of the primary senses is certainly a devastating loss, even though it is not mortal, as you point out. Death is not the only result that qualifies as devastating.
