So how about keeping the user on-site for a while and notifying them immediately if you detect their confirmation email has bounced? If you push the temporary session dowbstream enough to correlate seasion with bounce tou can talk back to t

Fascinating point about parents — knowing their genome means you could in principle know the entire potential configuration space of all their (real or hypothetical) offsprings' genomes.

Aldrin and Armstrong are NASA astronauts. They spent the best years of their lives wholly bought into the centrally-funded prime-contractor system. They were at the absolute apex of that system, and they and a very small handful of astronau

But isn't it entirely the point to be annoying? If there were only the preference pane showing which apps had accessed the data, it would already be too late. This is just like with location information on iOS — you have to ask the user bef

For traditional wafer processes, you consume a great deal more feedstock than goes into the active portion of a wafer, and even then you may end up grinding away much of the material such as in the case of backlit imaging sensors. This 'exf

I could swear I got logged in to Schemer via my Gmail (i.e. OAuth) just now without me doing anything but visiting the link for this post. Am I missing something here? That doesn't feel right.

This is wrong on a lot of levels (x-platform, cpu usage, etc) but does make for such a pretty effect. Would be lovely if CSS(n+1) could support this kind of transform, especially to pull it out of the GPU instead of bit-banging through a &#

The Prometheus movie website has a blinking star that's showing Morse code as a hint to more teaser content. Take that animated gif, break it into frames, pull out the primary color from each frame's histogram, then requantize the time-vari

Using iPhoto on my iPhone 4s right now — the maps are ... weird. Italic serif fonts, oddly bad anti-aliasing, and off-center-by-2-pixels highway numbers. Feels like it's been upscaled from half resolution as well. It's clearly not Google's

I like the trick of placing something meaningful at the api root url, will use that in the future. "You of course need a JSON viewer plugin to do this." Why not emit your JSON slightly prettier from the server side? http://stackover

Thanks! All things being equal, d3 is _amazing_, by the way. I used it (with some difficulty) last year for internal reporting tools. I'm looking forward to grokking this slideshow.

Thanks for the data! Playing with OCR engines lately has gotten me into the habit of wanting to turn static bitmaps into searchable and transformable data. I haven't taken a crack at graphs yet but it looks like things like http://plotdigi

Honestly it wasn't meant as a canard — this was basically my thought process when I was thinking through an app idea. I'm surely uninformed and some of that is a function of my own laziness, but it's also a reflection of how much diversity

Written to what API? Gnome, X, Qt? You'll be addressing a slice of a fraction of potential users. It'd be great if it weren't the case, but the diversity that makes linux interesting to hackers also makes it really tough to roll out GUI app

I'm glad to see the short array syntax. Having strayed from PHP for a while to work on Ruby and JavaScript I'm really enjoying the ability to leave out semicolons in unambiguous end-of-line situations. Would love to see that make it into PH
