Running a production line at full blast for a long time will put extra wear on both machines and people. You might also be tempted to skimp on maintenance to produce more. Tired people are more likely to make mistakes. Less maintained machi

I agree. Ultimately I think it's just another leaky abstraction like so many other things we do. Wonderful when it works as intended and less so when it goes wrong. I also think that the more layers of software and management you add i

The C128 PLA chip is in essence an ASIC. It's using a PLA design but it's only programmable during the mask creation. Using a PLA logic array is just a very efficient way of achieving the design that they wanted. I don't thin

Yes, I'm currently working on implementing this using a Lattice iCE40 FPGA. Not the largest or most powerful of devices but I don't need much for this and it does have a fully open source pipeline available. The other part of reve

Author here. The PLA in both the C64 and the C128 are primarily used to generate chip select signals for the chips that are connected on the system buses. On the C128 it is also involved in the DRAM refresh handling. The C64 PLA was origina

As someone living outside of the US I find it interesting (and perhaps a bit predictable) how the normal response is something in the lines of "If you do not want capitalism, you want communism". This form of polarized view is fal

ColdFire is still around but is also not fully binary compatible with 68k. There have been attempts at making Amiga accelerator cards using Coldfires, but I don't think I've ever seen one that was fully finished.

The Apollo core is not open source. There are some other pretty nice and featured 68k cores that are open source (TG68, WF68K30L etc.) but none that is really close to the features and performance of the Apollo 68080.

This was proposed already in 2012 with RFC6698. DNS based Authentication of Domain Entries, DANE. Hasn't really gone anywhere of importance. I personally think there's been a few factors as to why: * Distrust of DNSSEC and central

Sorry to be picking a nit here but the SwinSID is not FPGA based, it's a software emulator running on an AVR mcu. There is an FPGA based version of the SID called (surprise) FGPASID ( http://www.fpgasid.de/ ) which is pr

I always found the notion that we have to climb upwards and always make more money to be a bit weird. As long as I have enough to live comfortably, stash some away and not worry I'm good, I don't need more. As such, I don't r

For me I've noticed that over time I've stopped worrying about the code and now mostly care about the data. How it's stored, how it's transformed etc. The code comes from how the data is managed. As a new programmer, you

Zorro-2 was superior to ISA in pretty much all ways that count. It had auto configuration and just worked in general. PCI is vastly superior to Zorro-3 though, in both features and performance. Z3 never achieved the performance given in the
