I wonder if f.lux should have a P.V.T. test built in!

You read a scrolling UI quite a bit slower than a static one. (However, Google probably knows that most people click on the first few links anyway.)

We have a UI in the works for "night owls"...people love the sunset, so we'll still include it, but we'll have a longer transition for people who want to work late (or who live in northern climates).

Or maybe you could argue that Amazon/Netflix bring their own customers. Apple's policy is, if they bring a customer to you, they get a cut. How many app store users haven't heard of Amazon?

"Group of 2" in California can be husband and wife. (We did this, because the plans are better, the rates are better, and they can't limit you based on pre-existing conditions.) Just make a partnership and pay the state taxes annually (ugh)

One big issue is that engineers haven't seen cost of living increases in the last 10 years nearly on par with lawyer/finance/professional jobs. This was justified by the "tech crash" for many years, but it went on too long (only in the last

During development, you can use PSDs directly. For shipping it all gets compiled to squeeze out overhead bytes. There's a parallel text file to describe hierarchy and extra properties. Sort of clunky, but it works.

Picasa's UI was done entirely using Photoshop files. Layer names=widget names, etc. Our small-company team loved it. But at Google, I found very few engineers who wanted to touch Photoshop, ever. Biggest issue with using Photoshop in your a

The experimental setup isn't great: the HN population almost certainly has an elevated level of education in areas like math and statistics. I don't think you should ever compare subjects who can compute "expected value" with ones who can't

Doesn't it show what's wrong with an organization when people's heads have this much politics and organizational complexity in them? His advice is to ship good software to get ahead, but his thought process is all about everything else.

Their description of Lacquer sounds problematic to me. The usual failure case for this is that a cache node goes down for awhile, misses some invalidation messages, then comes up and starts serving (stale) traffic again. This case isn't so

This one is sub-pixel accurate, and the Google one snaps to pixels , which looks bad when particles are moving slowly. Canvas version looks a TON better to me.

A lot of applications generate their own data. The pure "on disk" piece might be a fraction of the total. e.g., consider z-sorting vertices for a million-polygon model as it rotates (that's useful for some kinds of transparency.) Bandwidth

There was a Linux update to support multi-byte encoded characters many years ago, so that default grep was suddenly much slower, and setting "LANG=C" would make grep many, many times faster, since it would work on 8-bit values only. I'm not

This sounds related to the accounting method businesses call "accrual" as opposed to "cash". http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/article-29513.html I would also like to see one of these services predict periodic expenses properly. e.g.

These systems seem to be, in practice, relying on having working sets that mostly fit in RAM. It's a nice world when you can stack 64GB in a box and never worry about disk, but having worked on systems that need more working set than this,

Craplets... It turns out that PC hardware is frequently sold at a loss today, and up to $100 of the cost is paid by craplets. This stuff doesn't stop until people know what's installed, why, and what resources are being used.

I have many ad servers blocked at DNS mostly because of cross-domain tracking. Browsers (by default) allow third-party cookies, and while I don't mind if a site runs ads, I do think cross-site tracking and profiling has to be more controlla
