What a wonderful place the world might be, if only journalists would stop assuming the duties of sociologists, anthropologists, and anything else that requires a calc-based stats course to begin to get the gist of.

I'm thankful that HN is (kind of) remaining an island of politics-light STEM discussion, differentiating itself from the angsty college protestor vibe of places like Reddit. The response is muted because 1) increased maturity, and 2)

Around 15 years ago I made Linux work well on various laptops. This included X and KDE. More recently I've tried the "great Linux laptops": Thinkpad and Dell. I had so many issues that I had to stop using these laptops alt

Whether or not Israel's actions need excused ("exempt") is a matter of opinion. And an unbiased opinion can't be developed when we're only willing to criticize, or even look at, one facet of the issue. Or to put it

California is a confusing place to drive. Trying to find out how to pay tolls online was confusing. One bridge had a "stop and pay tolls!" sign, but no one was stopping, and I found out later they issue the toll online. This wa

Wall of text on point. I got a shelter dog 5~ years ago and it is a relatively difficult breed. I knew nothing about dogs. But I love it and take care of it (because I take ownership of my decisions, particularly where they involve the l

I don't think there are any engineers (people who have gone to engineering school) that haven't used LaTeX. [Editing based on replies]: Apparently I am wrong. Maybe it's just at the grad school level that one can expect to u

It's virtue signaling. Companies are trying to outdo one another in showing support. This is why we get insane things like Namecheap threatening to cancel domains belonging to anyone registering from Russia .

There is another silent majority: those who have their opinions cancelled by social media outlets. This includes Twitter.

Do you find the original video low quality as well? Would you like the video to be updated to be more modern?

Yes. What people don't understand is that much (maybe most) of the world is like this.

There is no narrative. Humans prefer to function alongside those who hold similar values to their own. This increases efficiency (when the values are productive) and naturally results in a feedback loop that ideally will improve that valu

To me it's more confusing that there are those who'd immigrate to a country, then abandon it in that country's time of need.

I did this and I agree that it's a better solution (for me). Keeping your neck twisted to the side for long periods of time is not good. With an extra wide monitor you can pull over windows to the center if you want to focus on them

Sending a rejection letter (email) out is a nice gesture. Too often companies just ghost you, even if you've spent time with them in their office during interviews and lunch.

This isn't true at all in my opinion. Hiring criteria are so vague, subjective, and interpersonal fit is also very subjective, that failure isn't a direct indication of one's ceiling.
