Wow, Incanter looks great. I've got to look into this more. How do you know I don't do my research by making provocative statements on public fora?

‘Cause if it’s ever been done, anywhere, by anyone, someone’s done it in Java. Twice. If only. If I could get something like Python's Numpy on the JVM, I'd be using Clojure on my current project(s).

Python's lists are just as good for recursion as Scheme's cons cells - the data structure doesn't really matter. That was my nitpicky point. I agree that Python's emphasis on beginner-friendliness was the smart choice and led, ironically,

Good points. But favoring Python lists over recursion is like favoring chocolate over logging. However, I'm probably just playing gotcha here. My apologies to HN and Guido. My more important point is that recursion is good for real world

What I think stood out most as mistaken about Guido's post was his conflating recursion and recursive data structures in his third point. "For practical purposes, Python-style lists (which are flexible arrays, not linked lists), and sequenc

It's always pretty cool to see people overcome brutal rejection. Except... this structured flowchart thing really did deserve that brutal rejection letter and if the chart gained respect and prominence then the wrong side won! I'll conced

Ah, so naked recursion is recursion. EDIT: I was going to criticize your idea that there is anything lacking in "naked recursion". It's a really powerful technique and in fact I just wrote a recursive function for production code an hour

Graphs are the new hashtable - this is a great feature. Much of the interesting things being done now are done with giant graph structures. BTW, it's so lame that PLT Scheme is going in the opposite direction. They had the same excellent

No, they aren't very good. I think the problem is cultural. Programming Java gets you comfortable with extreme verbosity and tons of structure so its libraries end up like this: http://ws.apache.org/xmlrpc/apidocs/org/apache/xmlrpc/serve

Minerals wouldn't be hard. The existing artifacts lying around are better than the richest old ore deposits. The most urgent work would be to make books or scrolls to write down the knowledge of the survivors before they get senile.

And Spanish unlike Italian has the exact word PG was looking for to say 'a success', and it's is perfect for startup founders: 'exito'. Of course it's derived from the same Latin word as English's 'exit'.
