Indeed. I find it interesting that the (first) space race was very much rooted in the Cold War and as such a race between ideologies; Capitalism vs Communism. Yet, both sides used similar structures, i.e. state driven bureaucracies to get t

Yes, I've noticed this as well. Growing up as a kid I was always interested in how things worked. Luckily my dad was an engineer and was more than happy to answer all my questions. In university I was also surrounded by people who were fasc

I think he's saying that the conclusion from the historical study (people used to have bi-modal sleep patterns) isn't exactly revolutionary either. So it's in line with the parent post in that there's not really anything noteworthy in the a

It doesn't come as a surprise to me that the group dynamic of bringing lots of talented people together in the same building is superior to brainstorming. However, that seems like a false choice to me. Brainstorming is often used to solve a

Would the work on numpypy also make e.g. scipy available? Or would a separate effort be needed to move that to PyPy? Their website (scipy.org) mentions it builds on numpy, but it's unclear to me if it also depends on other libraries. Edit:

Wow, what I find most interesting is they're rendering GTK directly to canvas. I wonder how it performs though. The video on the Broadway blog they link to seems spiffy enough: http://blogs.gnome.org/alexl/2011/03/15/gtk-html-backend-upd..

Slightly off topic, but how are people using SSL with App Engine? Last time I checked they didn't support SSL on your own domain. I'm not sure if this is similar for e.g. Heroku. I presume most non-trivial apps would have some kind of secur

Hehehe, yes I keep opening printer dialogs and new windows in my browser because of this. Though to be fair, that's often more due to being on Windows and not having 'focus follows mouse'.

Eventually yes I guess, but I think it might be a while before Nokia end up paying Microsoft (in net terms anyway). Microsoft are probably more interested in gaining market share at this point, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's more mon

Didn't Microsoft with ASP.NET Pet shop still advocate stored procedures around that time?

I would prefer to run Ubuntu as well. Unfortunately it looks like Optimus support won't be coming soon, so I'm starting to lean towards biting the bullet and switching to OS X.

I'm interested in that as well. In addition to the reflection issue, I believe another issue was that every program brought in the whole core library. So even a simple Hello World app would get to a few megs. It also made start-up of the ap

I disagree; I think the free plan is too cheap. The free plan seems to offer almost everything most restaurants would need. Why would they move to the premium plan? It offers more locations and menus which is probably only relevant if you'r

AFAIK Newspeak is written in Smalltalk. I wonder if it's possible to run it on (or port it to) JTalk.

Wow, this looks really cool; I'm definitely going to play with this. Has anybody used it for anything yet? I'm wondering what the speed is like. Since it's pure javascript, I'd imagine it would be quite a bit slower than R. However the demo

Oops, you're right. Somehow skimmed over that on my phone. Apologies. Still I think the actual blog title is a little bit less sensationalist than the submission.

Fair enough. The submission title does say google+ though. Additionally, I think strong statements like 'failing miserably' require strong evidence. This seemed more like (weak) anecdotal evidence and opinion to me.

Mono with support for NaCL sounds interesting. Does that mean though the browser will have to download Mono every time it encounters a web app that's written in e.g. C#? Or will it only have to download the C# bytecode? On a slight tangent,

Orders of magnitude? I can believe your desktop is faster than a laptop, but 100x faster seems a stretch. Still, I think there are valid reasons for preferring a desktop. Besides it being faster, you can have bigger screens etc.

I'll try to tackle the first two :-) A lambda is an anonymous function; it's a function that doesn't have a name. Of course you can assign it to a variable if you like to. So for example in Javascript these two are equivalent: function

Just out of interest, what do you mean by 'way too fast'? I would think that having a fast hash would be a good thing. Or is it because an attacker can generate hashes for some dictionary very fast? Isn't this why you'd use a salt as well?

While I agree that the ecosystem for tablets is more important than for phones, I'm not so sure this will automatically lead to a Windows/Mac situation. Windows benefited a lot from lock-in and network effects. These are becoming less relev

Good point. The sad thing is of course that if you were able to show a clear correlation between (violent) video games and criminals, the most probable reaction would be to ban these games.
