It always strikes me that Excel is essentially a functional programming language. A limited one perhaps (no looping/recursion) with an awkward syntax (all those commas), but still one that tons of non-programmers manage to learn and create

Perhaps because it's not "huge fucking news", but just more conspiracy drivel?

Aside from the 'new' way of multiplication (which doesn't strike me as too bad), I think asking kids to make a stem-and-leaf plot of the birthdays in their class is actually really cool. It shows them how the things they learn can be applie

Add to that the chance of one or more of the commenters here actually knowing something something about nuclear plants seems far greater than on one of the mainstream news channels. Thanks for posting.

That seems like the kind of thing that would work if you're (a genius like) Knuth, but maybe not so much if you're me. Even though I like to take some time to draw things out on paper, I don't think I'd ever have the confidence (or the skil

Indeed, not everybody necessarily wants to be an entrepreneur. For example, one of the reasons my mom works is because she enjoys working with other people. Running her own business from home wouldn't work for her in that sense. I'm not say

Hahaha yes, while I liked the thought exercise I kept thinking: "Why would I want to cool it?" In fact, I often pre-heat my cup with hot water before I put coffee in it, so it doesn't cool down as fast.

I remember reading somewhere earlier that it did have an "aggressiveness" algorithm in the sense that it would take more risks if it was behind, i.e. answer questions with a lower threshold of "sureness".

Well HAL 9000, while cold and calculating seems to be scared when he's being turned off. So I'm not sure I agree there are no emotions. Who knows, maybe things like emotion just appear as side effects of the simulation once it becomes compl

Wow, I knew the + operator was weird, but didn't realise it allowed you to do stuff like that. What I don't get though, wouldn't you still need to call eval() on it to do anything with it? Or does javascript do a 'implied eval' when you try

Yeah, hardly scientific, but it's at least anecdotal evidence that there's some room for improvement. Like you I wonder how different the results are with google.ru though. I live in Ireland, but sometimes do queries in Dutch. Google.nl oft

I also agree with their premise that a lot of the development cycle already happens online. E.g. bug tracking and code repositories. I think if it will stay exclusive to (client side) web development for a while though. But who knows, maybe

I wonder if there's any article with more details on the internals. From reading some of the other stuff it seems they have competing models and Watson picks the answer from the model with the highest confidence. But I haven't found anythin

Isn't an X window manager just another X client too at the moment? Couldn't that system still work on Wayland? I might be completely wrong about this though, so someone more knowledgeable please explain. :-)
