I bought a system76 years ago wanting to support their open source work. Maybe it's changed since (?), but mine had a Clevo shell which meant it had a bad keyboard and a terrible trackpad, with a cheap plastic feel and lots of flex. It

I use OpenBSD because it's a very pragmatic choice for servers. Nearly everything is "off" by default and I can add only the specific things I need, reducing the attack surface. Pledge/unveil makes sandboxing my applicat

May have happened? Given what we've learned about the NSA over the years, the news that's leaked is consistently _worse_ than expected, not better. Pessimism is warranted. This policy provides cover for the NSA's PRISM partne

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Facebook has made promises, then broken those promises, time and again. They've lied to founders they've acquired, to users, and to governments and regulators. If anyone trus

Matrix is a protocol. Element is a reference app built on top of that protocol, and Element looks like Slack/Discord. Other apps built on Matrix do not look like Slack, e.g. Fluffychat, which looks very similar to Signal.

Got it. So the concern is that there's no support for time-based deletion of messages? That is on their public roadmap, and I think it's reasonable to assume that'll be deployed before modern ECC is broken. Or am I misunderst

Matrix is a protocol, Element is a Slack-like app on Matrix. It sounds like you have issues with Element as a replacement for Signal, which I totally get, but I think it's worth distinguishing Element from Matrix. Element being the onl

I don't think anyone takes issue with the fact that the mistake was made or that it was really hard to track down. Shit happens. How you handle it is everything. No communication on it and issuing no warning to their users for a critic

In word but not in spirit. They stopped updating their repo for an entire year while integrating a crypto shitcoin in secret. These actions betray trust, and trust is Signal's entire reason for being.

Matrix is a solid replacement. Element isn't as easy to use but it's coming along. Quality-of-life features normal users expect like stickers, gifs, etc. are woefully lacking, but the important stuff (y'know, actual messagin

The issues I encountered while using MariaDB in place of MySQL were subtle -- most things worked as expected, which makes the issues so much more unexpected. But at the end of the day, the same migrations produced a different schema. Arguab

Yes, this is what I do. You just set a DNS record on a subdomain, e.g. matrix.mydomain.com, and use that as your home server. Your username can still be @me:mydomain.com with this setup.

Uber tried to charge me $90 to go 25 minutes away from LAX -- the Uber lot had almost no people waiting (not a busy time, and the middle of the day), and it had a 25 min wait. I took a cab instead, $50 including tip and 3 mins in line. I do

What do you disagree with specifically? The reasoning in that link is absolutely correct. We can argue that POP, etc. should have 2FA support added to the protocol, but that's not the point the author was making.

There are two types of options, NSO and ISO. You want ISO as an employee because it's better for taxes, but that has a 90-day exercise window set by the IRS. You can push for yourself paying higher taxes in exchange for more flexibilit
