OSX was based on code from FreeBSD and NetBSD and not Linux http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X#History and Apple has used plenty of open source solutions (gcc, samba come to mind ). Not to mention putting money and resources behind openso

I'll bite.. why describe your UI in XML when interface builder does it for you? How does pegasus deal with localizing your UI in different languages? This seems a bit like reinventing the wheel for very little benefit. Who is the target de

Developers will gravitate to what makes them money. If it was marketshare then more developers would be writing apps for Symbian than for iOS or Android.

Good points.. it would be the same for a person who wants to get into programming but doesn't own a computer.. they still have to get the cash from somewhere to buy the equipment. Many years ago, I was in this exact situation. I planned acc

That's true.. I just find that owning a mac to be in the cost of doing business. That just maybe outside of the means of the average hobbyist developer.

Today's Mac mini's are more than powerful enough to write code on. But the gist of your argument seems to be that the cost of buying a mac seems to be a big barrier to entry in some markets. While I would agree with that to some degree, th

Maybe.. just maybe.. Apple is doing all the right things ( so far as profitability is concerned ) and the competition doesn't have a clue. They are competing on Apple's turf in much of the same way they have always done things, wondering wh

(Replying to myself here) On the other hand.. maybe it boils down to what the users will put up with. If you come to iOS with a real crappy interface 9 times out of 10 you will be massacred in the user comments and reviews. Maybe Android u

While I can't speak for Android, I think the simple answer is that Apple provides sample code and applications that are examples in great UI design on iOS. I'm not seeing the same level of detail or commitment from Google or its partners at
