There is no need to reinvent packer and vagrant. This “project” would be much better when it was a collection of packer templates. I’m using several packer templates and prebuilt vagrant boxes and vagrant’s workflow is much better than this

Why? I’m happy with Vagrant (libvirt/VirtualBox), Multipass and LXD (also provides secreboot + UEFI VMs + USB redirection). No need for another tool.

In my experience it’s the opposite. Alcohol destroys relationships. It’s nonsense to medicate stress with alcohol.

No, it doesn’t contradict daemon-less (wrt resources used by the daemon). This “daemon” only runs activated by a systemd socket for a few seconds. Whereas Docker CE always runs at least containerd (dockerd is also socket activated). You co

Isn’t this easily detectable for any malicious script? Just a small timeout and try the next port.

This would be illegal in Germany where you must take notice of every email accepted by your email server. The junk folder doesn’t help because you would need to read through it nonetheless.

Good introduction to Nix. I wish I would have had this when I started. But what do they mean with “works forever”? What if the Git repo or Web server of the project is gone in several years? How do you reproduce it? Does niv include a local

This makes Alpine interesting for containers. Docker makes it so hard to run systemd.

Docker has with no doubt much better UX. It just works and it’s very easy to use. For podman is seems you need a bit more knowing what you are doing. You need to know iptables. With Docker your database container is reachable in the Interne

Docker isn’t true open source in my opinion. With true open source you can compile your own version of the software with your own changes and it works just like the official release. You can’t do this with Docker Engine afaik.

Rootless Podman does this as well but with the subuid owned files. For instance you run postfix in a container and it has files owned by postfix. You can’t change the files outside of the container. You can make yourself root in the namesp

It’s written in Go so it’s a bit shady to have an install script. This is how instructions should look like for a Go application: https://docs.gitea.io/en-us/install-from-binary/

I’m not sure if the API is stable enough. But podman is in fact libpod (was named to podman) and it’s used to some extent in Cri-O. Nothing prevents you from using it as a library.

I agree that podman isn’t more secure but the project seems to be more open to contributions than moby. You can still use podman rootful and use it like Docker. Then there should be not security issues.

I mean so I can reproduce it in 10+ years where many git repos don’t exist anymore. Go can keep checksumed copies of any code it uses to compile. I’d like to see this in Nix as well.

You can get the reproducibility resolved. But when I tried nix I didn’t found a way to save the source code easily in my project. Similar to the vendor directory in Go there should be a way to backup the source since the source can go away

On CentOS and similar distros I agree. But on Debian like distros podman has too many rough edges and the packaging isn’t something you can contribute to easily on GitHub. I find this sad since podman is really good but there isn’t much eff

Doesn’t seem to be a fair comparison. Docker Desktop has access to your whole filesystem and can be used transparently in Terminal.app. This is were the bad performance results from.

Both can run systemd in containers. Podman can be used for system containers. Podman can start containers without root privilege while LXD is a daemon that needs to run as root.
