Huh! Learn something new every day -- so are lifetimes still exactly describing when things get dropped? And anything implementing Drop just doesn't get optimized lifetimes?

Oddly, Rust's ownership system really does solve these problems, and Non-lexical lifetimes should eliminate accidental scope-broadening. Unless you are doing some mega-schenanigans, an e.g. MutexGuard gets released precisely when you t

I guess I don't totally understand how a public official can "allegedly" disappear. Doesn't he have job responsibilities? It's been a week.

That's... not what slavery is. That analogy is extremely poor compared to using securities derivatives, which is a field Taleb is familiar with. Edit: also, is this feature of salaried employment so misunderstood as to require an analo

Right. But some languages prefix the string data with its length and omit the null terminator. So, depending on if the struct is passed in registers, you could say .length is free, in that it wouldn't even need a load.

I suppose the unfortunate thing is, that isn't his role. He can still do engineering work when he has the time, but me, the SEC, and most other humans understand the CEO of a public company has actual responsibility towards operations.

This takes on a particularly hilarious tone now that lots of people assemble their own computers. Obviously, that quote is utter hogwash, but it might be worth saying explicitly, at least for HN culture: cooperation is essential, and would

I'm most frustrated by a particular song I purchased in iTunes maybe 15 years ago, which is not just gone from my iTunes library but disappeared from almost all existence. Real art is being lost here.

I stopped using Hugo for this reason. Some point release broke my ability to rebuild my site, and I was just donezo. Better to write like 100 lines of go to write the files myself.

You pass it the update function, the one function handles all updates. Typically, you'll have a case statement in that function to dispatch it out to something more specific.

Turning Html Msg types into actual Dom nodes means hooking up the event handlers so that they call update with the Msg the event handler is given. Browser.sandbox is building the Dom nodes and has the update function.

In this hypothetical, you also need something like ten percent of Americans to be crane maintenance workers, wouldn't you? Based on the crane numbers above it might even be more.
