> the Pebble app notifies and asks if you’d like to order another ring This comes across much more dystopian than I imagine the author intended.

Not the same but I wore ear buds and listened to music while having a tooth pulled, they didn’t mind.

Big fan of sublime merge. I recommend it a lot to people who need to dip their toes in source control and want some layer of abstraction, but also want to feel like they’re connected to the underlying tool (git). Merge balances this very we

The vast majority of developers working with git daily don’t know what a bare repo is, or that it exists at all. It’s not obscure knowledge as such, it’s just never come up for them as something they need.

These types of issues have to be the largest footguns in the react architecture. Relying so heavily on the linter to avoid the initial dependency mismatch issues and then on memoising to avoid the re-triggering can really feel like dancing

In FIAT money lending is the act of money creation, rather than lending existing money held in account. I’m guessing that wouldn’t have a parallel with stablecoins because the technology won’t let you just make new money at will?

Depends on efficiency of compression I guess. If X bytes of data takes N time to transmit, and each slice of N takes Y CPU cycles during transmission, how many Y must your compression algorithm use, and how low must it lower N, in order to

The power level model of permissions feels to me a bit overly simplified. It’s so easy to imagine scenarios where you need exceptions to the rule of permissions existing on a single axis that it seems very limiting from the outset. The idea

Cars are the primary mode of transportation but we don't expect everyone to be car mechanics. Some people pride themselves on being able to change their own oil and fix minor issues, which is admirable, but is obviously never going to

iNaturalist is great for logging observations (their iNat Next app is their new one). They also have an app called Seek that I think is more aimed at kids, but it comes with trophies and streaks and stuff like that.

For me it was the lack of portability (it's a chunky beast), I just wasn't taking it anywhere because it takes up so much space in your bag. By comparison the switch with it's disconnecting controllers fits in my electronics

I grew up in council housing built during this period. It's not exactly premium but it was built fairly well and they sold well when many of them eventually made it onto the private market many decades later. Good sized gardens and I r

It turns out the question "how long will it take for a unknown mix of fibers in an unknown configuration to release most of the water I knowingly put in" is difficult to answer. We'll have AGI before accurate washing machine

Apple isn’t a luxury brand in the normal sense, it’s odd that people think this because they’re more expensive. They’re not the technical equivalent of Prada or Rolex etc. Apple’s ecosystem cohesion and still unmatched UX (still flawed) is
