Hawking’s original voice synth was the default sound of the DECtalk hardware speech synth. It would not surprise me if SGI’s software implementation were similar to the he most popular hardware of the 1980s.

The best parts of CDE were Motif and ToolTalk. This ... thing omits both. This is a CDE skin for FVWM. Nothing important from CDE is included. None of the technology ideas. Just a cute window manager.

This article subverts its own thesis. The $435 hammer was an “accounting artifact,” but the government is routinely fleeced and the DoD in particular is unable to accomplish basic accounting tasks. My favorite paragraph: > Conversely, s

Last I checked, ships are still built from steel, just as they have been for a century. Also the ffg/x “competitive” “bidding” process is a joke. They are paying five vendors to make PowerPoint presentations, then whoever made the pre

In reality BIW gets to double dip — they charge for R&D and also postpone the “D” part until after the ship is built, at which point the Navy will pay again to fix problems that should never have made it out of the yard. Why do anything

Just think, this was a “successful” project. If you think this sounds like a boondoggle, look at the F-35, the Littoral Combat Ship, the Zumwalt class, or the Gerald E. Ford. The disaster described in this essay is the proverbial good ol

That’s simply not true. Manhattan is home to 1.8 million people, several hundred thousand of whom are children. 18% of Manhattan’s population is under age 18, compared to 24% nationwide. Fewer families than a suburban area, sure, but still

This isn’t a REAL ID matter. REAL ID is orthogonal. NYS is refusing access to their “normal” non-REAL ID databases, and it bothers someone in the executive branch. Notably, for Global Entry, you already need a passport - which supersedes t

They won’t, though. Sooner or later the DHS will be forced to back off, because NYS residents draw more water in Washington than Trump cronies do in Albany. This is grandstanding and little more.

Right. In New York, unlike most states, REAL ID is both optional, and not offered unless you go out of your way to get it. You can still get a "normal" driver's license without any rigmarole. And that's fine with me.

The on-board NIC in an octane is 10/100, so network anything will be painful . It's possible to install gigE, but you will need a PCI-X shoebox and also a NIC with compatible firmware. Not super easy to find.
