If that's a fear worth courting WWIII over, shouldn't we have been considering the strategic importance of manufacturing stuff domestically for... IDK, the last forty years? TBH, I wonder if it would be worth tossing off a few pol

The goal of a narrow victory seems faulty. I wonder if a "narrow accelerationism" might be more effective. IP disputes tend to be B or C stories in the public eye-- either super-technical where they only really interest people in

I feel like mandatory licensing is the answer. Have a state ombudsman who sets a price of "marginally above reasonable" so that people are still encouraged to negotiate first, while providing a way out when it's obvious the

The risk point is always "good enough." Yes, you can run a better model if you have more hardware, but does a better model translate to a more compelling user experience? Will people be willing to pay for slightly better AI imag

IMO, there's a viable business model for "background news". CNN feels like a channel you could set the TVs in waiting rooms to and not cause a fuss. They aren't as politically loaded as MSNBC or Fox, and the programming

I will say, the branding was actually pretty clever. I was a Windows Phone user back when it first came out, and the general consensus was that it was clearly a code name and they were going to find some bland corporate name for launch.

I suspect it was a market failure. As home internet moved from a competitive dialup market to a handful of DSL/Cable players, all ancillary services dropped in importance. People weren't willing to take 128kbps ISDN instead of 10

The question is whether any players actually need copyright as we know it, or if it's a convenience. There are definitely some creative types who have optimized their business around the affordances copyright has provided. But can t

I won't say that USB4 is confusing, because I admit I don't understand it, because I haven't really bothered to try, aside from noticing some motherboards advertising "support for special USB4 module socket, coming soon.

The point was less about the permissions themselves, and more that you're replacing a centralized "everything you want is in one ISO" model to having to retrieve a bunch of packages from third parties after the end of "t

It's weird how we see the business people making this same sort of mistake on community after community. It's like there's a blind spot surgically implanted in them during the MBA programme. It's well known that most on

That tends to wave away the responsibilities of the distributor. The distributor's job is to package software. In effect, putting it in their repo is sort of vouching for it-- they know it's going to work properly with the rest o

I tried a couple of CD-Rs that were stored in a dry closed drawer for most of the last 20 years recently, and they seemed to at least initially come up. Now I can reinstall Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 slipstreamed!

The Unicomp phenomenon was that IBM literally spun off their keyboards along with the printer stuff to Lexmark. Lexmark, in turn, begat Unicomp because they'd rather sell fiddly terrible $19 inkjet printers. It does seem like it'
