Interesting. My experience is hardly a representative sample, but almost all theater I've seen recently has tried to 'break down the 4th wall' (i.e., the invisible one between the actors and audience on a traditional stage).

I've never noticed it to be otherwise, except during take-off and landing or during severe turbulence. The other exception was the front of the plane for long while after 9/11; maybe that's what you remember.
