In MOST other first-world countries, the working class has the RIGHT to elect to work less than 40 hours/5 days per week (in exchange for a proportional reduction in salary). In some cases, you must be a parent to be eligible for this.

I don't even have a wife and kids yet, but I already find many of the video games I enjoyed as a teenager to be too demanding. Fallout New Vegas was an awesome game, and I remember spending virtually my entire summer vacation one year

Yeah, you're fucked unless you work fewer hours. By "fucked" I mean "doomed to a relatively-miserable existence". I don't care if you have a FETISH for writing code, you do not want to do it ~40 hours/week

If I worked a blue-collar/service job, making 1/5th what I make as a SWE, having to commute, stand on my feet all day, deal with customers... I'd do drugs. Like I get it. I get why people do drugs. I get why people don't

You spend most of your life at work (at least in the US). 24 hours in a day. 8 of them spent working. 1 hour for lunch. ~2 hours getting ready for work/sleep each day. 8 hours for sleep... that leaves you with ~5 hours per day, but you

From good ol' Chat GPT: The document is a research paper titled "The Google File System" and was published by Google in 2003. It describes the design and implementation of a new file system, called the Google File System (GFS

I feel like the number of such chips required for “production scaling” would be so low that they could find a cache of said chips for said purpose if they wanted/needed to.

At the risk of sounding contrarian, I don’t think it’s mind-boggling at all. There are two types of software engineers out there: those who read to understand, and those who understand to read. What I mean by this is that I find most of my

I haven’t used KDE is several years, but I do use Gnome/Unity with Ubuntu and Fedora and while not entirely bug-free, I find them “adequate for full-time Linux use”. What are the reasons to use KDE over Gnome, aside from that Android p

I’m sure the topic of leetcode has been beaten to death on a forum such as this, but serious question: with ChatGPT, why WOULDNT I cheat, assuming the leetcode is the unmonitored/unproctored variety (most are this way)? Like seriously.

My “NAS” is a “slim” Intel NUC 8 with a 3D-printed “riser” that allows it to fit a 4TB (15mm) 2.5” HDD. No redundancy of course, but otherwise it’s superior to a legit NAS or Pi NAS in every way.

All told I had a pretty fun time trying to self-diagnose myself, and I did a better job diagnosing myself than the docs I saw. I firmly believe that the only reason I’m not on disability and unemployed is because I took my diagnosis and tre

To be clear, I haven’t been formally diagnosed, but after 3 docs I give up. There’s really no point anyway unless I’m looking to get it treated surgically. Even then, people say it’s hard to get a vascular surgeon to do surgery for TOS. The

Fair enough. I didn’t realize they were being so shady with the benchmarks. Isn’t Neo4j written in Java and Memgraph written in C++ (with lots of Python extensibility)? By that alone I would think Memgraph would be more performant most of t

I like Agile, but I hate “Agile” (that is, how Agile is interpreted and implemented by the management of the companies I’ve worked at). I worked at Allstate years ago, and was on the team that piloted Agile (Scrum). It was done by the book

Yeah. I love writing code, but working with others while doing it has usually been unpleasant. The recurring theme is that management doesn’t understand how software is written, ignores tech debt, sets unrealistic and arbitrary deadlines, e

What are radars? Is that the internal name Apple uses for bug reports? And more importantly, why would Apple ignore radars like this? It was clear (at least in the 10.8 days) that Apple cared about reliability and stability.
