"... I do not wish to work for Google. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever." Are you really sure? How about in 15 years when nearly all programming jobs have been replaced with AI[1]. Programmers are jobless, hungry, homeless and with

Yep Japan is amazing. No tipping, but if you ask for help in a shop the staff will literally run to help you.

I think this applies to many roles, not just engineering. I could imagine a copy-writer getting stuck on some exact word choice, a salesperson mulling over every reaction and word from a previous meeting. A designer taking in everything the

Or you have hot humid cities like Fukuoka and Taipei that move a lot of the pedestrian and retail underground. I think the best solutions depend a lot on the local weather conditions.

This is a good quote from http://martinfowler.com/articles/web-security-basics.html The modern software developer has to be something of a swiss army knife. Of course, you need to write code that fulfills customer func

This is a good point, but it actually goes further up the chain. The universities in UK, a lot of their funding is driven from publication record of their staff. So they too are just responding to incentives - https://en.wikipedi

Why is it so ridiculous? Isn't it trying to serve as a retention incentive? Obviously it can back-fire on the company. If the share price drops a lot then people that were planning on staying till the 6 monthly vesting may quit.

I've travelled extensively for the last 2.5 years using a combination of Airbnb, hotels (booked via Agoda & Rakuten Travel) & apartments arranged via local classifieds (Craigslist, Gumtree etc.). At the beginning airbnb was my

Nice! The same conversation in the context of sports, where they really do want the best: "We hire only the best" "What do you pay?" "Between 10 and 30 million USD per year"

I wonder, for such mission critical data a good strategy would be to start rotating out old drives at set periods. Maybe replace one drive of your RAID5 every 6 months, not matter what the health. Once you've replaced all the drives, t

Firstly there seems an inherent bias that young people want to be homeowners and not being a homeowner is bad for people. My first reaction to "Under-35s in the UK face becoming permanent renters, warns thinktank" is, "So wha

Slightly concerning is that mysql is no longer built into v2, and their Databse-as-a-service is yet to get out of beta - https://www.ctl.io/dbaas/ "DBaaS Beta is not recommended for production environments" W

A nice observation from the Xerox, Xerox, Xerox, Xerox chapter: "In any case, office reproduction began to grow very rapidly. (It may seem paradoxical that this growth coincided with the rise of the telephone, but perhaps it isn’t. All

This is an important point. You cannot directly compare salary to business income. The day you quit your $150,000/year dev job is the day you income hits zero. Compare that to BCC that he effectively quit four years ago. 2007 $6,200 &

This risk premium is an important part of that equation. "So out of the original $4R, we’re left with $0.1R in profit. That’s 1/40th of the revenue making its way to actual bottom-line profitability, and even that takes 4 years t

As an aside to (2). You might not even need to go as far as creating and marketing a full SaaS. I know small businesses that are paying $100-$1000/month for small little services or manually doing tasks at similar costs. Automate/

Few additions: Add £100/month more expenses for public transport to work (since in London it's not very common to live within walking distance of work). Probably a fair comparison might want to factor in university education cost. In the UK

I guess for a fair comparison you'd need to consider taxation and major costs. In UK £45,000pa would net you £2,750/month after tax. Most likely your employer would be paying or contributing to your pension. Health care is free. Assuming yo

I like your perspective on this. It is impossible to see the 'damage' done by capital applied (or over applied) to the wrong thing. So people don't really think about it. What great things were NOT created by the great people LivingSocial h
