Indeed. It's like we've been accruing technical debt for centuries by taking the "easy way out" until our technology was developed enough, and now need to pay it all back, with interest.

I agree. Youtube included. I frequently find myself using Google to search for a Youtube video. It is usually better than searching Youtube itself.

I'm aware that I'm unlikely to ever find another job with the same perk, but I'm ever to go looking for one, I'd really like to have a private office (with a door! and windows!) like I do now.

I've recently been in a similar situation. After some research, I decided to go with Flask. It is so easy to get started, you will drop that python is complex for a web app opinion very quickly. Now, over the last couple of weeks, I&

My understanding is that the "low-fi", more robotic one uses an offline TTS engine for when there is no connectivity. When connectivity is good, it will switch to better, cloud-based one.

Even though you don't mention it, I would bring up Gitlab as well. We have a hosted instance at work (CE), and I've fallen in love with it. So I decided to put my personal stuff on Gitlab.com. All my new personal projects have bee

RAM is not cheap at all. Especially for many of your costumers running on limited resources. Also, a chat app is generally not the "main" application and should strive not to deprive the system of its working memory. But, hey, tha

I agree. At work, one of my projects is a cross-platform scientific C++/Qt application. It is currently open, and with 5 charts (hundreds of data points each) and a full-blown interactive 3D representation of a model, it sits at 160 MB

If you are willing to read a book, I strongly recommend the C++ Primer, 5th ed., by Lipmann et al. [0] It's a very didactic book, covering C++11 well. Unfortunately it does not cover C++14 or C++17, but if you are just starting out wit

I'm a C++/Python dev by day, so web apps are all personal projects. I've been using Python + Flask on personal projects just because Python. On the front-end, I try to use as little JavaScript as I can get away with. Recently

You could use a website like WhatToMine[0], together with an estimate of the hashrate of the specific CPU you are looking at, to figure out how much money you could generate with said CPU over a day of mining at 100%. Estimates can be obtai

Hi Peter, Just wanted to say here that in my experience this is now taking much longer than 3 months. Mine is currently approaching 4 months, and I have colleagues that have been waiting for over 5 months.

Qt does have QSharedPointer and QWeakPointer. Also, you can use QScopedPointer for things like implementing RAII with custom deleters, etc.

Last year I went through Anthony William's C++ Concurrency in Action to better understand the "new" threading library. No complaints. Actually, I've been using it in several components that are "pure C++" (i.e.

Qt has moved into C++11+ world for quite some time. IIRC 5.7 was an important step in that direction, and they keep moving that way. Move semantics are much better. Not sure what you mean by clear pointer ownership, though.
