I don't disagree with what's fair, just saying that if you have a non 50/50 arrangement then you are probably going to have a different sense of when it's time to cash out than he is. Why not just make him your first employee and compensate

If you don't plan to seek funding it doesn't matter what you do. If you do plan to seek funding, figure out a way to make it a 50/50 split if you are going to have a cofounder, any other arrangement will raise eyebrows and cost you time an

I can't believe nobody has mentioned collaborative filtering. Simple collective voting and new/hot/controversial are very unsophisticated measures of how much any particular user will like something. For an example of how powerful collabora

If you consider how much we don't know, the "creation story" just happens to be a very small fraction of that. Religious people put a lot of weight on the creation story. It's not important. It's perhaps one of those things that people te

You don't have to do anything too sophisticated to get some great results for your users. Check out this article and collaborative filtering library: http://www.igvita.com/2007/01/15/svd-recommendation-system-i... I actually want to play

This is a good point. Whether the successor is Ruby 2.0, Ruby 2.2 or some yet to be invented language, the warts that Ruby has now ought to be discussed and understood if we want the successor to be better. I personally think that Matz had

I wouldn't say corrupted, just different. I imagine there are many cases in which the different semantics are used intentionally. This is really not a huge issue, b/c anyone who has worked with Ruby enough knows about it. It's mainly that

I'm not saying that lying is good, but in any small company there is (or should be) a collective belief in the success of the company and its product. If we wanted to be rational we could just look at the numbers and realize that over 80%

I can't advise you to leave b/c that's just the way sales happens -- you aren't going to escape this sort of thing even if you go to work for a non profit. Non profits often exaggerate the amount of good they do and how important their cau

Think about it this way: Powerset only indexed wikipedia. Why? Probably b/c scaling is somewhat hard. Microsoft can help with that, and if there are any short-term gains to using some of Powerset's technology on msn search, all the bette

There was just an article linked on HN the other day by some professor who pointed that out. But the logic is pretty straightforward: Most startups fail. Suppose startups that succeed have a return of x%. Compare this to established firms,

Big companies don't always do a good job of keeping up with the latest and greatest ways to cut costs ... but overall big companies are more profitable than startups and more efficient, so it's sort of tough to knock their approach too much

You seem to be assuming that p2p is the most efficient way to distribute content. It is not. Using a residential cable modem for pushing upstream content is not using it the way it was designed to be used. There is also a tremendous amou

True... and there are others who just think "neutral means good" and haven't thought through the issue very carefully. What it really does is limit people's freedoms, it does not enhance anyone's freedom, it merely redistributes costs in an

Consider any bandwidth user who doesn't use p2p software: Suppose they download 3 movies per night from iTunes. On my connection movies take about 10 minutes each to download. That's 30 minutes of 100% capacity out of each 24 hour day.

P2P uses a significantly greater amount of bandwidth than online video does. Take, for example, iTunes. It takes about 5-10 minutes on my connection to download a movie. A typical movie lasts 1-2 hours. So assume there are 5 people in a

I'm also embarrassed about those people. We live in a global economy, why should I have to pay extra to someone who thinks that his/her citizenship entitles him/her to an above-market wage when there is a hard working person willing to do

Sounds like you've gotten some good advice so far. Here's what I'd add: Camping in the lake Tahoe area is great, particularly one campground on "Emerald Bay". If you're there in winter, do try snowboarding/skiing. In the SF area I recomme
