This article puts a whole new spin on 'anti-virus'. It posits that open sourcing 'important' genomes, those of presidents and others, would be the best defense against any sort of synthetic biological attack, targeted specifically at the i

Airtime does not solve a problem today. It is wayyy to ahead of its time. When we are all in automated cars and have more discretionary time. Services like airtime will be successful. Right now we're too busy to invest the time in a prod

I predict that we will have to legislate Driverless as the default state of all vehicles within the coming decade. why? because at greater than 10% penetration of automated vehicles, those people still in 'manual' mode will become more and

Apple lost this particular battle ( mobile search ) the day Google bought Android. OSM is cool as we know, but it was not deployed until now, and the reaction is epic. Apple will fight the good fight like bing is doing in web search, but

I disagree. I've modeled it. If 500+ of these cars go from SF to LA on a weekend, it's going to be utter chaos. One pump at one service station servicing 500+ cars is barely a win on the SF to LA route for gasoline, so it's beyond incredu

I really enjoy this article and hope tesla succeeds, but I am always turned off by plug-in EVs. Say for example, he does achieve 30 minutes charging for 3 hours driving. And say I drive from SF to LA. after about 3 hours, there is this one

I think that traditional topographic mapping is not very useful from a business standpoint. When there are more, or a critical number of the autonomous vehicles from Google deployed in the wild, I fully expect very high resolution 3D maps

I've always thought that the real money in mobile comes from very accurate map data, and very accurate personal position data. that way when you're walking around town, you can 'ask' your phone for directions to eat/shop/whatever, and it c

That is a very serious claim. Do you have any data/evidence to support this, or is it all strongly worded opinion? If that were actually true, it would be grounds for regulatory action under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. Many compan

What was old is new again. All this has happened before, and all this will happen again. Apple, Google, and Microsoft are the new "Big Three" ( Ford, GM, Chrysler ).

I actually expect major pushback to automated cars for just this reason. and suspect that ultimately we will have to legislate that all cars be automated.

You should build them. Why wait for a SuperMicro to get into the fray, when you could do it yourself.

I'm actually curious whether all these startups are linked, like through the same incubator or something. If so, clever strategy for getting press, esp. on HN.

I thought it was very telling that out of the 136 companies surveyed, only 2 had a payment system. Speaks volumes about the sort of companies YC is trying to incubate/build.

I found searching minus the top 10k websites to be most effective for finding new stuff. It seems that after that point, a lot of the 'crap SEO' stuff is gone. One problem, the sort of baby with the bath water issue, is that the quality o

I think you're getting ahead of yourself here. DDG has 0.1% of all search traffic ( 30m out of 23b queries per month ). They get all of their 'relevancy' from bing, and blekko. The reason you like them is because they clean up these result

I don't assume to know what anyone thinks regardless of whether they are a man or a woman. I do know that belittling people and playing 'white man's burden' on them makes them feel disadvantaged and marginalized. I see that behavior coming
