I worked on the identity system that chat (whatever the current name is) and gmail depend on and we used IRC since if we relied on the system we support we wouldn’t be able to fix it.

I wonder if the name changes (Pacsal -> Modula -> Oberon) did damage to people’s perception in the 80s and 90s. Maybe they thought it was in decline when in reality the name just changed?

That original device was magical. Yes, it was ugly, but first-time user experience was magic. 1. You bought it with your Amazon account so it was automatically tied to your account. 2. You bought some books or got some samples before you go

Can you cite something that describes this? As far as I know all the research suggests that you can learn certain things at any time after your brain has matured enough for the skill but not before. So putting off a year of school has no ne

This is crazy. No. Lack of school doesn’t create harm. Attempting to shoehorn traditional schooling into an online form certainly can.

Request ID! I added that to the Amazon web servers about 20 years ago! My code probably doesn’t exist anymore but it’s funny to see it referenced on HN this many years later.

It’s just a trade-off. Which part of the OS do you hate fighting the least. Given that by the early 2000s you couldn’t really get away with a text-only terminal as your dev machine and years of fighting with XF86Config and some other bullsh

I think this is a good question to ask. But my immediate reaction is: why? Land is scarce so it makes sense to “invest” in, ie convert dollars into land with the expectation that you will be able to convert it back into more dollars later b

Yeah we really don’t have a good word for this in English. I have trouble describing what I do. Being a parent and educating your children at home is exhausting so it doesn’t fit with the common understanding of retirement.

Not going to argue about having to spend money to get some time away from the kids. But education? If you retire then you have the time to unschool your children and while your family and friends will think you are crazy your children will

My kids are so much happier on Minecraft because there's no built-in pay-money-to-get-better mechanism. Minecraft has a HUGE value in the price you pay to the amount of awesome gameplay you get. Even with Realms it's cheap compare
