Yeah I was taken aback when they talked about “linked lists” and instead of banging out a simple linked list they used an STL container that isn’t necessarily optimized for the use case. It’s malloc-heavy and uses full sized pointers instea

I feel the same way! I also feel like the LaTeX crap on top of Plain TeX is crap and it fills me with rage when I try to find info about TeX and always get back something assuming LaTeX. Your stuff looks cool, I will take a look!

I’ve been writing a lot of MMIX lately and I really like big endian. It’s so much nicer to watch memory and registers change when ordered this way.

I seem to recall discussion of this in the RFC. They do ultimately have an order if transmitted over a network! But most of us are used to getting them a byte at a time through the memory interface so we are ignorant of this.

I agree with the sentiment but the RFC even mentions the PDP 11 as the first computer to claim being little endian. I wonder if the ascent of C and Unix at that time also contributed to it.

I would like to bring up the question again of “compared to what?” Are the metrics: 1. Based on university entrance (in which case you need to recourse and ask the same questions of that) or 2. Based on some pragmatic list of things that wi

A few weeks ago I read the original paper where the names big endian and little endian came from and was really surprised that it was published in 1980! So, before then we didn't have a common way of describing this I guess. It's

This is exactly what I noticed when getting rid of stuff on my company’s “for-sale” mailing list. It doesn’t matter what it was, there was a HUGE difference in responses between $0.01 and free. It could have been a brand new in the box $50

I’ve recently been writing personal code that leaks like a sieve. It’s just not worth my time to find every leak when the lifetime of the process is finite and short and it will only ever run on a machine with gigs of memory. I haven’t thou

J is an APL language. APL is the coolest language you’ve never heard of. It’s mind blowing in the same way people talk about Lisp, but more so since the concepts are so alien to most programmers.

In 2009 I began writing code for a new company doing natural language processing. I was the engineer at the time and got to pick my tools. I started with Ruby because I was sick of C++ and Perl and Ruby looked like the future. But I soon

Yikes don’t say that out loud! But seriously, the left needs to think more like this. The right plays dirty and if the left plays like this they get the same outcomes of playing dirty but is not saying anything bad or wrong.
