Sensors can't be the only reason, since humans can tele-operate robots through vision alone (no tactile or force feedback) to do things that no autonomous system today can.

Perhaps that engineering bureaucracy (not sure what you're referring to, to be honest) in the context of safety-critical systems is not "idiot culture".

I thought the Harvard architecture was pretty common for microcontrollers, where firmware lives permanently in Flash memory. PIC microcontrollers have opcodes that are 12 and 14 bits, for example.

From my understanding, this is already present in modern architectures and systems, and will keep increasing . Instead of building only general-purpose circuits (e.g. something like a CPU), you can build lots of special-purpose circuits (mu

There is another take on this issue. That it's not that the shoes are gender-neutral, it's that "male" is neutral. This essay explores that take: http://www.tarshi.net/inplainspeak/marked-women-unmar

Can you clarify what your point is? I don't know how to answer the question, because springs don't store inches. If you are making a point about why the spring/inches analogy was bad, I'd like to hear it.

It's just not clear to me how to think of the water tower as being an element of a hydraulic _circuit_.

Yeah, but maybe it's trickier to relate the restoration force of a membrane with displacement of water.

What?? Okay then count by lengths of the spacing of carbon molecules in graphite, or Plank lengths, or whatever. I don't see why your objection is on inches or otherwise any unit I chose for dimension of length.

I didn't agree with what you wrote and maybe I can explain why. Springs store inches. You measure displacement in inches. Spring constant is just the value that relates stored inches to available force. (You can swap roles of force and

I think that most people (not teenagers) cannot hear past 15 kHz, especially with other sounds playing. This is reproducible at standard sampling rates you mention. Harmonics are integer multiples of frequencies. Harmonics of an ultrasonic

Yes, you don't need the machinery of learning when you already have an algorithm you're happy with. Adding a table of numbers, I don't think anyone hopes to do much better than we already do with our circuits and computer arc

Interesting. I don't think it's a particularly stable reference in the short term. It's true that the power companies adjust it to hit exactly the nominal frequency over a period of many hours, but not at any one instant. In

You raise a good point. a second is an arbitrary length, so nothing universally significant about 439 Hz or 432 Hz or etc. However, when you are trying to build a device that oscillates at x Hz, there are engineering-ly sigificant values. F

The explanation about MC is too wrong to be useful. What on earth do the "nodes" (states) in a Markov chain have to do with the "nodes" (neurons) of a neural network?

I suppose I can see the similarity, in that there's some accumulated value (the sum) from reading some segment of memory, but otherwise I don't think the comparison is helpful.

I don't think that is really relevant to the discussion. Regardless of how a digital computer is physically implemented, we use it according to specification. We concretize the concept of binary by designing the machine to withstand no

I think the easiest way to see this is by an example of a non-differentable architecture. Let's suppose on the current training input, the network produces some output that is a little wrong. It produced this output by reading a value
