A smart TV can be a dumb TV if you never connect it to the internet and just plug in whatever you want to it via HDMI. I have a 'smart' TV myself and the only buttons I use on the remote are power and input select. It's never

Most government jobs in the UK require this too. However, they don't require a spotless record but there would be some types of offences (serious fraud, affiliation with organised crime, etc) that would make it impossible. It's a

1Password's guest mode is quite convenient and definitely provides a measure of confidence for the client. I use this with a number of clients and it works well for users of most technical levels. Once they transfer a secret to us, I j

I was interested in buying one of these but was concerned as it didn't have disk encryption. Once again I can't find any info about that so I assume this still hasn't been added?

Alternatively: develop your own internal control panel which lets you perform the specific AWS tasks you want to perform. Then you control when it changes. But I'd suggest using Terraform really, once you get the hang of it, you won&#x

This isn't a good cross-platform option but on AWS I just use systems manager and don't actually allow direct SSH login. There are a few things you can't do like using SCP but in my world this is a feature, not a bug. It mean

At least there's somewhere reasonable to host your code but the thing that made me switch from hg to git was the ecosystem surrounding it. For example - on TeamCity you can just upload your SSH private key to the UI, for Mercurial you&

I think it would have been more self serving for Epic to strike a backroom deal, they've got the clout to do so and it'd probably be better for their shareholders' blood pressure. On the other hand, if this plays out the way

To be clear, I don't think they're doomed, but I think this measure will provide ammunition to those who want to sideload apps and make their own app stores, which is presumably what Epic wants. I think this has been inevitable fo

Yes but Epic still needs those licenses to support those companies and continue to develop the engine. Regardless of the other matter going on, it looks punitive to me. I think when we look back on this event in 5-10 years' time, we&#x

Really? Not being a Java guy, what is the explanation for this? Terms like boxing and reference comparison come to mind but I can't stitch them into a narrative to explain this.

It depends how you designed your app. My app uses a RDS instance and a S3 bucket for data and file storage. I fel it is a best practice that your containers should be stateless (except perhaps in development). Docker is not very good at sto

Others are talking about process reasons but I have a technical one: We have an internal tool that listens to a message queue, dumps a database (from a list of permitted databases), encrypts it and sends it to S3 to be investigated by devel

SSDs have been out for a while and I'm guessing most developer workstations have them now and that's why a lot of software can suddenly be changed to have a disk heavy workload without a developer noticing. You should upgrade - it

Interesting, thanks. I guess I didn't consider it because I've never deleted a S3 bucket. We've got a few S3 buckets used in that way, I'll make sure our guys know never to delete them.

The one thing I found interesting was that there's no attempt to control distribution of extensions by signing or having an app store style review process... but surely that's not far away.

The main thing I liked about SWF was that the entire workflow was represented in my own code. We ended up cloning the parts of SWF we used when we had to deploy outside AWS. The decider/actor pattern is a great pattern and I'd def

You'll probably notice your disks not mounting and your vms not starting up and your users not being able to take data etc. Or not, depends on how frequently accessed it is. We'd definitely notice.

Yes indeed! But you mark the key for deletion and there's a minimum time of 7 days before it is deleted and during that time you can't use it. You've got quite a while to realise there's a problem and fix it.

There are other use-cases. For example, you can crypto-shred an unlimited amount of data just by deleting the key associated with it. You can also set up workflows such as your client owning the encryption key that encrypts data held by you
