Regarding your last comment: Had the same experience in Europe. I'm Austrian citizen, but live in the US. During my last flight back to Austria (via Amsterdam), the border-agent in Amsterdam asked me quite in detail about why I'm entering t

So far I have bank accounts in Austria and Germany and in both countries transfers to any other bank within the EU are completely free (and I don't have to pay any monthly fee for the bank accounts either). The user interface is also quite

No - it's not bad at all as long as you have some minimal understanding about what you are doing. Graylisting + Delayed SMTP prompt + Blacklists + Whitelists works pretty well for filtering incoming spam. For outgoing mail you just need to

I think there are two main reasons for this: (1) US laws make it rather hard for payment companies to operate outside the US (mainly due to money laundering laws). If you want to operate in Europe it seems much easier if the whole company i

People won't really care. They just use whatever is easiest for them. When central storage sites are shutdown other mechanisms will be used for sharing. But why bother as long as it works? You're not locked into a particular site, so there'

It's not about punishing the user's, but about keeping yourself out of jail. Why should the operators of a site risk getting extradited to the US, when what they are doing is perfectly legal in their home countries and lots of other countri

I only travel with encrypted data - both my laptop (linux with luks) and my phone (galaxy nexus) use full disk encryption. Currently it seems that the worst that typically happens is that they take your hardware away from you. I don't care

Email works fine, the problem is that lots of software implements it incorrectly. Take spam filters for example: The correct way for this (and what I also do on my own private mailserver) is classifying mail during the SMTP session. Thus, i

Power consumption of HSPA chips isn't that bad in comparison to LTE. That's also the reason why the international Galaxy Nexus version has a smaller battery than the US version.

This article seems to refer to the CDMA version of the Galaxy Nexus, which uses lots more power than the international version due to the power-hungry 4G chipset. So it might be possible that those issues don't apply to the international ve

No reason for me to enable ads, as long as they have a huge impact on my privacy. I don't intend to send a list of every single site I view to Google. Make a sane ad system, where ads are proxied through the same webserver as the remainder

CyanogenMod is only part of the solution: It still requires a proprietary radio stack for each phone and there is plenty of backdoor stuff someone could put into the radio code.

As a non-US-citizen I honestly don't see any major problem with that. com/net/org domains are handled by US companies and it's therefore clear for me that they fall under US jursidiction. If I want a domain that the US cannot take away from

YaCy (while a cool project) is not new and has been around for lots of years now. I think it has quite some potential, but don't expect it to suddenly lift of. It had enough time to do so, but didn't.

There are two problems with the MAC approach: 1) The amount of Mac addresses for each vendor is very limited. Blacklisting a few Mac addresses would therefore blacklist lots of routers. Combining this with the SSID doesn't really help that

Ads are one issue. Sending information about (almost) every website you visit to Google is another issue. That's my main reason for blocking pests such as AdWords, +1 buttons, and Facebook buttons.

That's not a solution, but sounds more like a thedailywtf.com posting. DST has not been any problem on most operating systems for a long time now. And for well written applications it should not be any issue either.

It's even different inside the US. For example, my company currently pays all health care costs for me (in addition to the salary). But as I understand with many other (small?) companies you have to pay for the insurance yourself.
