I hope this is meant as a joke. I've worked in research for several years and we almost exclusively kept LaTeX documents in a Git repository. This worked perfectly: Multiple people can edit the document at the same time and you can also add

Telco companies in other countries are able to do this. Why shouldn't companies in the US then be able to offer such a model? E.g., see "Bob" in Austria: http://www.bob.at/gigabob The table (for one of their plans) says: Included volume p

Be careful when using PwdHash. The used hashing mechanism is quite weak. If you don't have a long high-entropy master password, it should be feasible for a site-owner to brute-force your master-password based on the site-specific password.

I don't see anything scary. Nobody forces you to use Facebook (I very very seldom use it). Most of its users don't care about their own privacy, so why should Facebook care about it's users privacy?

There's a simple reason why Apple was often the first one to put something into a product: They could afford to sell high-end products for a high price and know that they still have lots of users who buy their stuff. Most of the other compa

I don't think he even needs to make it to Germany. In theory it should be sufficient if he boards a ship sailing under the German flag that is located on international waters.

Nothing new. Skype also allows you to freely choose the sending number of your SMS (however, it first checks if you can receive SMS at this number).

Parsing Apache logs isn't hard. There's a well-defined spec for them. Of course you have to keep track of stuff like escaping, but that's pretty trivial.

Why does your search engine need to store your mails? Can't this be a different provider?

Did they get some kind of permission by Google or by the authors, or do they just hope that no-one will sue them for copyright infringement?

Why can't you just take a standard Ubuntu and install the KDE packages? As far as I understand Kubuntu it's exactly the same as vanilla Ubuntu, but just uses different default packages.

One important point not raised in the article is that this is not only a security decision. Yes, from a security standpoint each single one of us might be better off with using Gmail, instead of using their own mailserver or a service provi

If you use Google Apps (as suggested in my post) the "goodness in terms of security and spam filtering" would be EXACTLY THE SAME as when using plain gmail.com.

I assume that the chances for you being sued for your domain are much lower than the chances of Google randomly disabling your account. Which has happened in the past: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=354593 and http://news.ycombinato

The point is that you're locked into a single provider and it's hard to switch. Using your own domain isn't much harder, looks more professional, and allows you to switch provider at any point in time.

The most important part of this: "With that said, I think it’s a bad idea to use a @gmail.com address (or any other domain name you don’t own). If Google – or your email service of choice – does turn evil or shuts down, at best you have to
