What’s the counter-factual here? Coca Cola not allowed to exist? Plastic not a permissible material for soft drink bottles? Nobody allowed to drink soft drink? Companies forced to clean the streets? I dislike plastic pollution as much as yo

My programs are not full of engines and cars and planes and boats and aquaplanes. These metaphors used to teach OOP back in the day seemed appealing but never proved their worth in actual software design and implementation.

I looked at that link but didn’t understand what I was looking at and didn’t see a link that would give me an overview. I’d like to know more about it.

So let’s agree that removing smartphones from one’s life is beneficial. Why not a dumb (mobile) phone, then? Why the passion for a landline? You can still exercise full control over when/where you answer it, but you gain a lot of usefu

Same here. What I think I’d like more is the ability to open the most recent command output in $EDITOR.

I switched from iTerm to WezTerm and haven’t looked back. It feels faster and it’s simpler to configure. I only have a basic use case, though, as tmux does all the heavy work for me. People with an appetite for more features might legitimat

Yes, and it is society’s responsibility to, not individuals’ responsibility, to address it.

FWIW, I’d bet some coin that current CharGPT would provide a genuine pseudo-random number on request. It now has the ability to recognise when answering the prompt requires a standard algorithm instead of ordinary sentence generation. I fou

I’m interested in the history of software development, and detailed case studies. What book(s) should I read?

Idioms can outlive their origins. People who never interact(ed) with a real SAK will pick up the meaning by osmosis. After all, I’ve never handled a petard, but I like to deploy the phrase “hoist on his own petard”.

Preventing the entry of something that can be made into a weapon is justified, yes. If you want to call that “starving children”, that’s up to you.

More power to DHH’s pen, in this case. What he has written is not remotely controversial, but some will use it as evidence that he is trans-phobic.

You’ve made a lot of comments in this thread, and they come across far more subjective than objective. For people who have just been getting along and making things, they’re unlikely to be all that persuasive.

The board was not 100% right, not even close. I’ll assume their technical actions were justified. But they screwed the communication badly in a domain where informal trust is an important commodity. Therefore, they flubbed a big chunk of th

The organisation already has non-technical people employed. They should be able to get basic communications right.

I’d invite these adults to consider what their life might be like had they never learned maths, or other school subjects they considered a waste of time. Maybe awesome, but I doubt it.

As a maths teacher who is interested in (and sufficiently skilled at) programming, I find teaching programming to be very hard, even to interested students. Teaching maths to interested students is not hard (for me).

I’m pretty sure he understands that keyword arguments are part of Ruby. But they require special syntax. He appreciates that in Python _any_ argument is a keyword argument if you (the caller) want it to be.

I use a notebook with ideas borrowed from bullet journaling, like an index at the start. That solves the “figure out where that one note is” problem. Each page is numbered (by me) so it’s easy to refer to other places in the notebook.
