Not really as I don't write enough Ruby to feel comfortable teaching it. If any Rubyist out there wants to steal this format and approach I would happily link to (and use!) it. Source files are all available at *.rst and there is a Makefile

Ah, you are correct, Python scoping is lexical. The point I wanted to make was more about no pre-declaration and I mixed up what I was trying to say. Thanks for pointing that out, it's now corrected :)

Thanks, it's odd that didn't work, as I've been working on these on an 11" MBA with chrome. As I mentioned in a reply below, there are also plain HTML versions of the slide sets that might be more suitable for reading. Edit: Ah, it happens

I'm sure I could, as the sources are just ReStructured Text. I've been meaning to update the index page to have links to non-slide versions of each document as well. If you take the ".s5" out of the URLs they are plain HTML. Edit: The title

I've started working on these slides for a set of tutorials I plan to give at $work. As I went on I thought they might be valuable to others, so I added an index page and posted them up. I'd truly appreciate any feedback the HN community co

I agree with your general point, but feel I should point out that this is possible in python using properties: class Int(object): def __init__(self, value): self.value = value @property def value(self):

Speaking of ridiculously verbose, if they're going to pull in Moose to do OO in Perl they could at least use it's ability to provide default arguments instead of abusing BUILDARGS: package Int; use Moose; has 'value' => ( is

I'll bite, speaking for Python, because that's the one I'm more familiar with. 1. Python doc has full up to date documentation for everything shipped with the standard library (which dwarfs PHPs grab bag of globally scoped functions) 2. The

That's pretty cool. I wonder if I could get away with using this at $work... Not to mention, one could alter the implementation to remove the inconsistency people are complaining about in Python.

Very much agree. An extra layer on the danger cake (for web apps) is if your user base grows slowly while keeping the business profitable. Suddenly (sic) you hit real capacity limits after n years, and have no idea how the "organically gr

Take this for what it is (anectdotal evidence) but I found that write performance with python+riak was abysmal, while read performance wasn't as bad. Unfortunately I didn't have time to hack the riak driver to use a non-google protocol bu

I don't think the GP was complaining about lack of attention given to his game, more wondering why nobody else has yet released a full game when he's almost done and not going particularly fast.

What WSGI server were you deploying on? I'm thinking of using Bottle for some providing some REST services, so any details you can provide would be helpful.

I clicked that link, because it seemed like it might be interesting. Nice to hear that it's still working for you after implementing something in it. Also, I may be in need of a nice async cassandra client very soon, any chance of an alph

Very nice. I did something very similar for an RPC server I wrote, but it's less general and relies on the ORM (SQLAlchemy). Essentially, it turns database id's into the mapped objects, checks the objects against the constraints declared as

For everything you've said about Riak re: stability and happy scalability, that's exactly why I was excited to include it in this test. I would like to prevent myself/my team from acquiring too many of those scars, so please elaborate on wh

I've heard this about Riak and I was quite excited to test it out for a new project, but in the limited testing I've done Cassandra and HBase both absolutely smoke Riak in terms of write performance. Not really apples to apples I suppose, b

Agreed, the important part about being concise is not that you can boil down a complex idea into a short statement, but that you can give the questioner the information relevant to them. When there is too much relevant information to be con
